Has anyone fired the new S&W M&P-22 Compact?

I wasn't interested at all,,,
Until I read that they were USA made.

I have a small windfall of cash,,,
And a co-ed who needs a graduation present,,,
Besides, I'm always on the lookout for my next .22 pistol.

So, if anyone out there has handled one,,,
I sure would like to read what you have to say.

Unfortunately, I haven't handled the compact yet, but I am nothing short of absolutely thrilled with my full size M&P 22 pistol. It has been 100% reliable through 2,500 rounds. About 75% of that is Remington golden bullet. The rest has been a mixture of Winchester, Federal, and CCI.

I am considering picking up the compact too for my wife. I just like that the full size shares all of my other M&P holsters... but she doesn't really need to practice drawing. She just likes going shooting out in the desert.

I would say go for it, for sure. I have dealt with S&W customer service on 2 occasions and they have been spectacular in that regard as well. Both times I called I was just asking for suggestions on something just didn't seem quite right. Without any hesitation they offered me up a shipping label and took care of everything at no charge.

Hello Malice,,,

I tried an M&P 22 one time,,,
It performed very well but I didn't like the grip.

Like all of the S&W semi's,,,
Just too fat for my K-frame hands.

But I see where if you own and like a M&P centerfire,,,
The M&P 22 would be a must have pistol.

Heck, I have ten pairs of matching centerfire/rimfire handguns,,,
I understand the benefits of a rimfire understudy pistol.

This pistol might be the gift for another undergrad I work with,,,
I've been teaching her to shoot all this past summer,,,
She's taking the CWP class this December.

I have gifted a few of my gun buddies when they graduate,,,
I was considering a Ruger SR-22 for her gift,,,
But this S&W Compact looks promising.

Thanks for your comment my friend,,,

The SR-22 is also a good option. One of my close friends has one and he really likes it. It's certainly smaller. Probably comparable to the M&P 22 Compact.

His has also been 100% reliable so far but he only has about 800 rounds through it. Still, that's pretty impressive for a semi auto 22lr.

I think either would make a really cool gift!

Good luck whichever way you go!

I have both the full size and compact. I like the full size and love the compact.

Compact has a crisper trigger, shoots a wider variety of ammo brands (CCI, Winchester, and Remington) and grip feels like the Shield.

Safety lever has a positive click.

Get the Compact and enjoy it.

Enlighten me about the action please,,,

Thanks for your replies,,,
I do have a couple of specific questions.

Enlighten me about the action please,,,
I'm at sea as to how it operates.

The S&W Website says it is,,,
"Single Action (Internal Hammer)".

It doesn't say anything about a decocker,,,
So I assume there isn't one.

So when you chamber the first round that cocks the internal hammer,,,
With an internal hammer how would you un-cock the pistol?

It seems to me that you now would only have one of three options:
  • Drop the magazine and then eject the chambered round.
  • Engage the manual safety so it's cocked and locked.
  • Fire the pistol until it's empty.

Does he slide lock open after the last round?

I know those questions might seem a bit elementary,,,
But the website says nothing about these things.

Thanks Gentlemen,,,

I have the full sized M&P .22 (Walther) which I like very much but it is in need of a taller front sight to shoot a center hold...then my buddy forced a brand new Compact upon me....best little .22 pistol to come along in awhile, love the size and it is soda can accurate out to about 25 yards. The Compact fits my paw so well it is just a comfortable piece to pump a 333 box or two through at one sitting ( between this pistol and my 15-22 my vast supplies of .22 have been lowered noticibly). The sights are very good for a pistol of this type, fully adjustable ( although mine needed no changes) and the trigger good for a plinker but not target quality, but then it is not a target pistol. Spend your cash on a Compact and you will love it.
1. Drop the mag and cycle to remove chambered round. Safety is metal, works with a "click" and the slide can be cycled while on.
2. Slide locks back on empty mag.
3. It has some sort of an unobtrusive key lock...never even looked to see if the key is in the box. Lawyer crap! No billboard warning notices.
4. Magazine safety

There's no way to lower the hammer on a chambered round?

There's no way to lower the hammer on a chambered round?

That seems odd,,,
Forces a Cocked and Locked situation.

But it's no different than my Ruger 22/45's or Beretta NEOS pistols.

It's just that I would have thought S&W,,,
Would do something different for a "tactical" style pistol.

Oh well, it's not a deal breaker,,,
I just find it a bit odd is all.

The pistol slide/frame is configured like it's striker fired brothers but in fact has an internal hammer. The safety can be applied when the hammer is cocked or fired (down) position but the hammer cannot be seen.

Yep, Ibmikey has it right. It acts just like a striker, it's just that mechanically it's a hammer that pops up instead. I actually pulled the safety levers off of my M&P 22. I treat it just the same as I do my other M&P's. No way to decock those. :)
