I have an old o.f. mossberg & sons shotgun, it is stamped 12ga 2&3/4 model 195D, HOWEVER IT IS NOT! The gun was stamed WRONG! it is acctually a 16ga 2&3/4 model 190D, the gun was purchased by my great grandfather for my grandfather from a hardware store in harrisburg PA, they had sold the gun but it was brought back and exchanged because a 12ga 2&3/4 shell wouldn't fit it, the store owner tried a 16ga 2&3/4 shell just out of curiosity and it fit, the price was marked down an the gun was sold the second time to my great grandfather. Who was more than happy to pay the discounted price, he then took the gun and my grandfather home on a public bus (try that now days:eek:), its my favorite gun and on a nice day its the first I grab for to squirrel and rabbit hunt with, but anyhow has anyone ever seen a gun stamped so wrong before?
 
Interesting story. I'm glad the bore is smaller than marked and not the other way around.
My father has an old Remington .22 lr bolt action. He bought it at an extreme discount because the safety is backwards!
I learned how to shoot with it. Someday I need to fix it with a dremel before someone has an accident.

Welcome to TFL. That's an interesting story. Have never seen that before. There are some Mossberg experts here on TFL that may be able to help you with actual Date of Mfg. if provided with the first 4-5 digits of serial number.

Yes, I've seen a few other guns ....where the model numbers were wrong ....my hunch is they stamped the barrels prior to boring them / and one got mixed up, in the wrong pile, if you will...

I've seen it on a couple of rifles and shotguns ...

.....and on a few handguns ( where the same frame size was used for more than one gun - like in an N frame S&W revolver - where the gun was marked as a model 28 ( .357 mag ) but it was a model 29 (.44 mag ) ...
 
Never saw one like that, but I did have a Mossberg barrel once that was marked 3" chamber, but was only a 2 and 3/4". The fella I got it from said it kicked the snot out of him shooting mags. Wonder why? I did ream it out. Goat
