i am planning on doing a bed job and free float my marlin xs7 7mm-08 soon. i have to grind off my pressure points to free float. if this makes my accuracy suffer, i was planning on rebuilding them. i saw this article and it seems easier and much more precise than using a shim method. what do you guys think?

Has anyone tried this? Yeah, he tried it. It worked for him.

There are two schools of thought on barrel floating. Once school says float them all, the other school says to float the ones that need it. I'm normally one of the float-everything guys, but I recently bought a clean, used Model 700 with a manufacture date of 1983. It's got a sporter weight barrel and it'll be a rifle I carry lots and shoot little. It also gives me 1/2 MOA groups with my handloads. It's got a contact patch about 1/2 inch from the end of the stock. My first inclination was to sand out that patch and float the barrel, but it shoots so good with it that I'm tempted to leave it.

Your mileage might vary.

YouTube has some good step by step videos. If you are not having a problem with accuracy dont bother with bedding your rifle. removing the pressure points on the barrel can not hurt though.
