I was at the range last night happily plinking away when I hear a commotion a couple of stalls down. Well I go to check it out (be nosey) and what do I find but a dejected shooter with a Charter Arms in I believe 44 Special. Anyway he had shot the barrel shroud right off of the barrel. I mean it was totally gone.

We safed up the range and went looking for it but it was no where to be found. Has anybody ever seen this? Basically the barrel looked completely fine and intact with the exception of the entire outer covering sights and all being gone.

Then the guy next to me locked up his Kel Tec but good. After that I packed up to cut my losses since I figured the gun gods were angry or something I figured I would quit while I was ahead and all my stuff was still working.

Great day at the range for me, not so good for others. I think I got out before the gremlins worked there way to me.

Not familiar with the Charter system but I assume the shroud is held on by a nut threaded at barrel end? Anything nut or bolt can work loose. That gun likely has pretty good recoil and things can get shaky.

I heard about this happening more gradually. Guy noticed his shroud slowly walking forward off the barrel. He said that the shroud was glued on with not very good glue accounting for its self immolation.

First I have heard with total , got lost , seperation.

Have heard of Smith composite barrel/shroud assemblies loosening up. Barrel usely goes the other way on them tho....closes up the barrel/cylinder gap and locks up the gun.

Yes.

The later Charter Arms revos had the plastic shroud glued to the barrel. It lasted... Well, it didn't last.

The problems with the shrouds shooting loose were apparently one of the reasons why Charco (the second iteration of the company, IIRC) went belly up.

I can beat that, though...

Years ago, when I worked at the gunshop/range, we went out to clean up one evening, and found a nice, big hole in the plastic cover for the lane partition.

Got a flashlight to see how badly the armor plating was buggered, and fished out exactly one-half of a stainless steel cylinder for a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum!

The hole hadn't been there that morning, no one had reported grenading a gun on the range, no one reported being injured. The cylinder looked like it had been split with an axe. We still cant' figure out how someone did that without hurting him/herself.

Mike,
I believe it ...a couple of years ago at a local indoor range. I heard a boom, boom, boom...."BOOM" silence ....scream!
A home reloader had double charged? a 38 special round and blew his little S&W J frame into pcs. The frame just in front of the hammer went up and out..but was still there connected in the front. The cylinder or what was left of it, was stuck in the lane partitions..both sides including the one next to me! And what was left of the gun.. wasnt much....luckily the pressure seemed to go up and out...his hand was bloody and his spirit shaken, but he was OK. It still freaks me out to hear 38's being shot and then a big bore soon there after...LOL.
Shoot well

Just an update...

As far as I know the shroud was never recovered. Gremlins must have needed parts or something.
