Happy Mother's Day, Mom!
Gee, I'd like to be there, but you know how it is. You have to go where they send you. Seems like the UN is always wanting us to get involved in these things, even when these people have been fighting amongst themselves for 3 or 4 hundred years. I guess Dad and my brother Bob and little Sissy will be taking you out to dinner again. I hope Dad's doing better, I know that mugger beat him up pretty bad. That emergency leave left them short til I got back over here. Gee, if only Dad could still carry his gun! That neighborhood was pretty nice, when you two first moved there, but it's kinda downhill now. Dad served over in Nam, and they won't let him carry. They send me here, and I carry heavy firepower all the time. Seems strange to be over here, trying to get other people free, when all the freedoms of my own country are being taken away.
I ran into Gary a week ago, you remember, we were always in trouble in school together. He said he proposed to Ida Mae, and they figure on getting married when he gets back. Seems like whenever he wasn't with me, he was with Ida Mae. Those two been an item since second grade. I guess I always knew they would get hitched.
Tell Bob I love him, and Sissy too. Wish I could be there, to share Mom's Day with you. Maybe, some day, somebody in the family will find out why I had to be here. I should be home in a day or so, back to America from fighting for someone elses freedom, while they take away ours.
Don't cry when I come home, Mom, remember I'll always love you and Dad, and my brother and Sissy. I'll be the third casket off the plane, Mom, don't look inside, the land mine made me pretty messy.
Happy Mother's Day, Mom! Hope someday America is as free again as we were trying to make this place!
Your son,
John
