Handguns should be referred to in the male gender!!

Unlike boats, sport cars, and the like, I think we must start calling our guns "it" or "he", but not "she". Went to a gun show today and noticed that gun makers have begun designing guns to fit the square box they ship in rather that the human hand or attire. I saw all the new HK, Sig, Walther and Glock stuff. Found them all to be too fat. The only one of the above I can tolerate is the Sig 220. It appears to me that when you get past the 1911, 1935, and P7 all that is left is "something different, but nothing better." Everything else seems to be someones attempt to make a gun that requires less training or allows more reckless handling. Both of these goals are indeed questionable goals. Anyone agree, or have I just had too much time for contemplation today? The old guns I referenced are slim, sexy things of beauty. These new ones all look fat and ugly to me. Am I being superficial again? hangfar.

I think that my Glock 26 is a thing of rare beauty. :D She's also is the perfect concealed carry weapon. She hides out comfortably on my person, works when I ask her to, and eats what I feed her.... She's beautiful. :D :D

Peoples' hands come in all shapes and sizes just like the guns. 1911's are not comfortable for me. I like the feeling of a fat pistol in my hands.

To each his or her own.

Neuter, thank you.

My car, my guns, my tools...

All are ITs.

They have no characteristics that would make me want to think of them in male or female terms.

They're INanimate objects, not animate.

Mike: something does not have to be male or female in order to be considered masculine or feminine. Of course a boat has no gender; nevertheless a boat is usually referred to as "she" rather than "it" because most people find boats to be feminine ("A boat is referred to in the feminine because it costs so much to keep on in paint and powder" -- Admiral Nimitz). So there is nothing intrinsically wrong with referring to an object -- an "it" -- in either feminine or masculine terms.

Hangfar, my Glock 26 is referred to as a "she." She seemed feminine to me, in that she is so much more petite than the average 9mm and looks so cute in comparison to my shooting buddy's Glock 20. (I went one step further and named her, Miss Anne Thrope -- but that is plainly anthropomorphism of the sort decried by Mike Irwin in his post.)

Uh - Some guns are masculine... Some Feminine.

One gun... The HK - is rather Muscular... Manly. Its a Guy. Call it Dude.
Another Gun... The Sig P230 - its curvy... sexy... Its a Chick.

So I would think it all comes down to taste...
A Glock 27? Short, beefy... Not only is it a Guy - but it's George Castanza from Sienfeld. The 26? Could be his Momma I guess. Oh well - to each his own.

Pistole in French is feminine. Pistola in Spanish is feminine.

There seems to be a tradition of making pistols feminine.

Hey Pax,

I didn't say there's anything wrong with it. I just said that I don't see it, or do it.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

I look down at her and I am pleased at what I see. Ever so gently I reach out my right hand until my fingertips make contact with her smooth enticing form. My hand firmly wraps around her as I raise her up before me.With eager anticipation my left hand now shares in this embrace. From years of experience my finger slides into position. Then the anticipation begins. pressing, pressing, harder, until that climactic moment. There is a shudder as she lurches upward. The sound she makes is surely one of pure joy. Yes,I have just fired my Sig 239.
Yeah,I guess you could think of a pistol as feminine if you wanted to.

At the risk of getting myself in a world of hurt with the ladies here, I don't think I'll be refering to my handguns as a "she". I don't want them to start acting up for 4 days out of every 28 :). There is potential to get really tacky here, I'll restrain myself.

Ducking for cover.

Hangfar, I agree, after all, guns seem to be accepted by most as a phallic symbol.
