Handguns on Amtrak Trains

My family and I will be traveling to a NW metropolitan area on Friday, and will be taking a firstclass Amtrak train.

I am fully aware of the Amtrak policy concerning firearms on the train. My concern is what prevents others from bringing them on board.

Are there metal detectors/X-Ray machines to contend with, do they pat you down or is it just a written policy with no search at all?

If the best I can do is a pocket knife then so be it!!!

Any info would be helpful!!!

Thanks,

I have often wondered this same thing. Are you driving to the train station so that if you see a metal detector you can go drop it in the car?

I've boarded Amtrak trains at Boston's 128 station (Westwood, really) and NYC Grand Central. Didn't see a metal detector at either. YMMV. Jared

I rode the Amtrak rails for many years as I had them for a customer, among others, for about 5 years. No problem, they don't have metal detectors or frisk you or anything of the sort. They do, however, have a very efficient police force that has powers similar to a federal agency. Almost every train has one or more undercover agents. Just so you are aware.

I wish he had attempted to pull his massacre on Amtrak instead of the LIRR. Half the people he killed may be alive and he would not have been tried in an earthly court. I've seen what the Amtrak police have done to some drug traffickers they happened upon.

I recall when I boarded the Empire Builder from St. Paul MN to Milwaukee WI (heading to Chicago as its destination) in 1992, there was a metal detector to place carry on luggage through. I don't know what happened to the luggage stowed in the baggage sections, but believe that they were treated similarly. I can't remember if there was a metal detector, but have a feeling that ther was. I just have this vague recollection of going through some sort of archway or framework in a line while on the way to get into the passenger waiting and boarding sections of the station. I don't recall seeing any uniformed police officers in the station, but maybe they were in other spots of the station.

Let me correct my earlier post. The carry on luggage went through an X-ray machine (like int airports), and not through a metal detector. Sorry about the mix up.
Mal H: Can you tell the story of the Amtrak police and the drug traffickers on this thread? I am curious to know.

ModI - No I really shouldn't. I was privy to some statistics and tactics only because I was at Amtrak HQ in Union Station, Wash., D.C. a lot and chatted with one of the Captains regularly. Also it was a while back - 1987 to 1992. I doubt if it is secret stuff, but you never know. I suppose I should have used the verb "heard" instead of "seen". Their security measures might have changed recently also. I am familiar with them up to around 1997. I wouldn't be too surprised if there are metal detectors now.

In other words, forget that I said anything! It might be old info now. :)

South Station in Boston is a starting station and they have no metal detectors. By the way Amtrack cops are federal cops. It says so on their cruisers. My wife and I visited the Springfield Armory last week. Guess what greets you at the door ???? Give up. No guns allowed sign and a metal detector. It was still worth the visit though.
