Handguns in Canada?

First off, just want to say. I DID NOT write this, I found on a blog of a comedian named "Kelly Oxford" She's hilarious btw, check her out. Enjoy this article. Don't know where she got it from, maybe she even wrote it? I don't know well read on!

HOW TO BUY A GUN IN CANADA, AND OTHER RATIONAL THINGS

The majority of pro-gun Americans seem to always be chanting ‘It’s my RIGHT!’

Do these people realize that in Canada you also have the right to own a gun and ammo? IT’S TRUE!!!
Oh, but I hate to tell you that your freedoms are encroached because silencers are illegal, ‘cause those are for murderers!!!!!
But you do have the right to bear the arms and shoot **** up the yin yang.

Here is how you do it: You can’t just decide you want to go the the local shop and pick one up like an Xbox game rental.

1. Pass a gun safety course (crazy people HATE tests! they hate a day long course! SCHOOL SUCKS!!!!)

2. Provide three references of character (crazy people are crazy! BILL IS CRAZY AND WANTS TO BUY A GUN!!! DON’T SIGN IT HAROLD!)

3. Provide information on your love life and financial affairs (have abuse charges against your lady/boy friends?? bankrupt? SORRY GUIDO!!)
***note: when husbands/wives get a license to buy a weapon, the spouse must sign a form indicating they feel safe with him/her buying a weapon.

Now mail this all in, get a license back in the mail (4-6 weeks later) and go and BUY YOUR GUNS AND ALL THE AMMO YOU NEED.

If you don’t like those rules, you are too stupid to own a weapon that can kill people when you move your finger.

There, now you guys know why seemingly normal young adults, husbands and wives don’t kill each other with guns in Canada we use swords and cars.

(sure you can get illegal guns, somewhere. but compare the accessibility to illegal firearms in Canada to the accessibility to legal firearms in the US and there is really no discussion to be had.)

Do they make them go through the same thing before buying a vehicle that can kill people just by pressing the wrong pedal?

I think snub nose revolvers are banned in Canada and I'm sure that alot of people on this forum own one and would not want to give that up.

Guns in Canada

Hi Everyone,
I just joined the board and could not resist the opportunity to reply.:D

The take above was a bit tongue-in cheek, but the basic process is there. Yes, we do have to take a safety course, or you can just challenge the exam if you're confident. There are two different courses, one for non-restricted, and one for restricted firearms. ALL handguns are restricted, and handguns with barrels less than 4 inches are PROHIBITED. There are other rules about certain calibers also, but that isn't germane right now. Some long guns are classified as restricted e.g. AR15 and all variants, even 22LR:eek:

For the most part rifles and shotguns are non-restricted, but regardless of the firearm's classification it must be registered with the federal government.

The idea is to help newcomers to shooting understand the different types of firearms, make them aware issues with similar-looking ammo and how mistakes can lead to misfortune, and a bit of history is thrown in. Most people feel as though they have wasted a lot of time with the course because they only want to buy a rifle to shoot some varmints and have no interest beyond that.

The application process is designed to identify persons who fit a certain risk profile. It is not exhaustive, nor is it trivial either, in that you can get banned from owning firearms if the screening process red-flags you. People who beat their wives of are under tremendous stress due to bankruptcy are considered riskier than the average Joe.

After the paperwork is processed you get a Possession and Acquisition License, which means just what it says; you can buy and own the class of firearm your PAL is good for. If you have a restricted PAL, you can buy and possess a restricted firearm, but you can't take it out of your house, where it must be stored with a trigger lock or cable lock in a strongbox or similar container, with ammo under lock and key also. You won't be using your pistol for self defense unless you happen to run into a particularly patient criminal who will wait while you get your piece organised.

You must belong to a recognised gun club where you have passed the club safety course and the Secretary of that club must submit a request for you to get an Authority To Transport your restricted firearm; but that permit defines the places you can take the gun to; usually your home or any other club in your province. There are some provinces (western)where the ATT rules are much more sensible.

Yes it is a PITA!
You should see how insane the rules are about what constitutes a prohibited device or firearm. http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/rp-eng.htm

I have written to the government get a rationale for the prohibition of sound suppressors. The RCMP, who manage the registry and determine if any particular device or firearm is restricted and/or prohibited, told me that the suppressors are prohibited because the Criminal Code says they are. They are unable to provide any reason for that to be the case.

Lawful gun owners in Canada are in the minority and we have the press and many other groups actively trying to get all firearms banned in Canada. There is a belief that by banning all firearms, we will never see the kind of massacre as just happened in Arizona. Funny how the criminal element just seems to ignore all these rules.

BTW- I shoot IPSC, and own several pistols and long guns. I can buy ammo pretty much in whatever quantity I like (10K rounds), but pistol mags are restricted to 10 rounds. Maybe someday I'll explain the rifle capacity rules. It is pretty complex stuff.

Some 'right.'

We used to have things like literacy tests and poll taxes for voting, but those were all thrown out since voting is a right.

Washington, DC is now doing the same thing.

While you have a 'right' to own a handgun for self defense in your home, you need to pass vision tests, safety classes, and pay large fees to exercise your 'right.'

Hello Iain and welcome aboard. I guess the PAL and RPAL replaced the FAC. Some areas used to be much easier to deal with than others, I guess that is still the case. What is required to transport to an out of town match?
