Handgun training near NY

I'm looking for ranges near NY that will rent and/or provide handgun training courses. Gun For Hire in NJ is looking good, although somewhat expensive, but I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend anywhere from personal experience. This training would be for both myself and my girlfriend, neither of us has our handgun permit yet.

Where is Port Henry, and how far are you willing to travel? NY is a moderately large state ...

Never mind -- Mapquest to the rescue. So you're not near NYC, which is what most people think of when you just say "NY." You're all the way up at Lake George, so you're really asking about training and ranges in Vermont (or possibly New Hampshire).

Actually we were thinking around the PA area. Probably make a weekend trip of it.
You're not helping me much here. Pennsylvania is a pretty large state, too (for the northeast). I don't know any tactical training facilities in PA, although they probably exist. I do know of some in New England, but before I even throw out suggestions I'd like a realistic estimation of how far you are willing to travel. In miles and driving time.

I went to Shore Shot Pistol range in Lakewood NJ for my Basic Firearms Safety Course, and I thought it was a good course. It cost me $125 and it was ran by Bob Cobinanchi. Bob is a certified NRA instructor, and the course gives you the training/education unit and certificate needed in many states as part of the requirements for a concealed carry permit. He went over the parts of revolvers and semi auto handguns, how to clean and lubricate your handgun, and gun safety. At the end of the class he takes you out to the range and lets you fire a few different caliber handguns showing you the proper technique.

I know its way out of your way, but you could always schedule an appointment on a Saturday morning, then get back onto the parkway and hit up Atlantic City for the rest of the weekend, or drop by the Jersey Shore.

Since it'll be a weekend trip I'd say between 300 and 400 miles isn't unreasonable, about a 6 hour trip one way would be acceptable. We'll be moving within a month so we'll be in the Glens Falls area then, this has the unfortunate side effect of restarting the handgun permit waiting period.

They're not looking too bad, and only about four and a half hours away. Being $60.00 cheaper than Gun For Hire doesn't hurt either. You wouldn't happen to know if you need any kind of handgun permit prior to taking the class do you?

No permit is needed at all. They didn't ask for a Firearms ID card either. The class I took had 5 people in it including myself. I was the only one who had a permit with me in the group. 3 of the people said they never shot or held a gun before the class. They do require you to fill out a simple waiver form prior to starting the class.

There may be something more local to you I'd try talking to the local gun shop people and see if they recommend anyone. If all else fails wait until you move to Glens Falls and check with the local shops in the Albany area. If all you're looking for is a CC class I'm sure someone up there is giving it. If you're looking for more training with that the local shops may be able to help find something.

We're looking for a full introductory course as neither of us has ever handled a gun before. The laws in NY mean that there's nothing in this state that will give us any hands on experience, it's technically illegal to physically pick up a handgun at a shop to inspect it before getting a permit for that specific gun. I'm still looking but I believe NJ and PA will be the closest areas we can get to.
