Handgun storage

I have a couple of 9mm handguns that I don't really use very much, and I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on storing them in such a way that I don't need to worry about rust. One is blued (CZ75B) and one has tenifer (glock 19).

I've been keeping them in their pistol cases in a closet. Do I need to coat them in oil or anything?

Pick a good synthetic oil ,i like Break Free clp and give them a good coating and set them in your favorate storage box or safe on a t shirt. I have a couple pistols that i only handle to check a couple times a year and put away again and have been coated for several years with no problems. Used it for 30 + years. I also use the same t shirt for oiling them so it has the some oil on it and has not been cleaned in 10 tens atleast. Then you must have a dry area. Use a dehumidifier or some kind of moisture abosrber if not in an dry area.

Here's what I do. Make sure you field strip them and coat any exposed metal parts including the bore of the barrel. When you get ready to shoot, run a dry patch through it. I've used Breakfree CLP for this but have started using Eezox on the outside. Both are good rust preventatives but the Eezox has won in a couple of tests.

Keep them in a climate controlled setting; i.e., inside the house and not inside the garage. Store in a container that allows some airflow so moisture is not trapped. Bore stores are good for this -- http://www.borestores.com/. They are available at a number of online stores.

This should keep your guns rust free for several months to a year or more without worry. If you live near the ocean, you will want to reapply the Eezox or CLP more often. There are other methods available for even longer storage but I don't have personal experience with these and they involve heavy greases, vacuum storage bags, and things of that nature.

p.s. Long term storage in plastic gun cases is usually not a good idea since it can trap the moisture. I've even stored guns in old socks after coating them with Eezox.

I have a pair of pistols that i don't want to have to use. But you know, the CDC just went to level 4. I live in the 4th. most dangerous city in America. Seems to be a rule of 4's going on here. I'll keep them within 4 feet at all times. You can be a closet gun owner all ya' want. Do consider that with rising unemployment, home invasions are getting more common by the day. You're not going to scare a bad guy very much if your guns are tucked away in an old oily sock. The bad guy will thank you for it though, when he finds that you took good care of "his" new guns.

Ok, one more time. Get a bottle of 2000 Washes or New Coat auto polish. Polish the gun inside and out, stock and all. You will end up with a polished finish that will hold up to handling and moisture. When it comes time to shoot it...just go out and shoot. Simple, cheap, and works better than anything else on the market.

The OP merely said he had a couple of guns he didn't shoot much. He didn't say he was making all his guns inaccessible. I have a number of my guns stored but I have more than one which are kept loaded and convenient.

That's not close enough, Joe!

I have another gun that I use frequently at the range that should be quite suitable for any bad guys that should decide to break in or anything.
