Handgun stolen a few years back...

A few years ago (abt 1995) my car was stolen from the parking lot where I was working. In the glove box I had a NAA .22 magnum revolver (1.125 inch barrel). When my car was recovered (but not the weapon), the perps had used the revolver to put five holes in my windshield.

I did not tell the investigating officer about the weapon (this was before we Texans could legally carry concealed) on the day of the theft, but reluctantly reported the loss of the revolver to the police the following day.

What I've always wondered is: What happens if the weapon is recovered? I'm not concerned about it being returned, but just will I ever know of its recovery? What "usually" happens? Anybody know?

Weren't you on the way to Don's Gun Shop on Perrin-Beitel? Or maybe the Don's at Fredericksburg and 410? Or Nagle's? Maybe the Blackhawk Range or La Paloma (as it was known then (it's Cedar Creek Range now)? Dietz Range has been around for many years, maybe you had been there? Maybe you were going to a friend's place where you could have shot that little gun legally? It's been a long time, maybe you aren't sure any more. You should think and try to remember.

If you were enroute to or from some shooting event, or gun shop, I believe that might be a legitimate reason to have a firearm with you. Check the laws....

Did you give the officer the serial number?
If so if the gun is ever recovered it will be returned after it is no longer needed as evidence.

A decent agency will do as Gunslinger says. I know of a few agencies that don't bother. They like having them melted down.
