Handgun Scopes?

Have a new Ruger Super Redhawk (.44 mag - 71/2" bbl)with which I plan to hunt deer here in western Oregon. Would like to put a scope on the Ruger but needs lots of advice and information about handgun scopes. Brands, magnifications, etc. What's good and what isn't?

Our woods here in western Oregon are dense and rather dark. If you plan on hunting early morning and late evening consider a good dot sight scope. If magnification is what you need, a 2X will work find. Again, you need something fairly bright, these multi power scopes get a bit dark as the magnification goes up. Most kills are also done in distances of 50 yards or less, so high power scopes are unnecessary.

Heres what I've used hunting.
Leupold 2x EER scope and an Aimpoint Comp XD red dot scope. I've used both successfully but I now prefer the Aimpoint. Mine has a 3.5 moa dot with adjustable brightness (rheostat sp?) which means you can adjust the dot to changing conditions so it remains bright and very visible. Its also parallax free, which is important in hunting where you may have to take a shot from an unconventional stance. The 3 moa dot covers 3.5" at 100yds, 1.75" at 50yds.... etc.

Rob & BK gave good advise. A Leupold 2x pistol scope would be perfect for your Redhawk. When selecting pistol optics FOV (field of view) is critical, magnification means almost nothing. Because of their long eye relieve all pistol scopes have very poor FOV. The Leupold will give you about a 21' FOV at 100 yds, relatively speaking it's one of the best. IMO variable power scopes are inappropriate for the .44 Mag, unless it's a quality 1-4 power. Anything over 4x is a joke (above that FOV goes to almost nothing). A red dot sight is also a good choice. Right now my hunting battery includes a Millett 30mm Redot on a 5" 629, a Leupold 2x on 7.5" Ruger SBH, and a 2x Tasco 30mm Pro-Class on a 14" Contender - all .44 Mags. -- Kernel
