Handgun Scope

Got a 7.5" Ruger SBH 44mag. I am gonna put a scope on it for hunting.

If I get a scope it will be a Burris 2x fixed power. I was thinking, and do I really need a scope? This is for hunting, so I want to be as accurate as possible. Would a red dot be a better choice? I see no shots further than 50yds. I have plenty of control and restraint on myself when it comes to not shooting animals further than my personal limitation. I have passed up way too many "maybe I could hit him". I also do not want to spend more than what the scope would/will cost me (around the $200 mark).

Suggestions?

Trapp,

I think the Burris 2X is a perfect choice for a .44 SBH. If you don't have much experience with handgun scopes it will take a bit of learning to be able to get the scope lined up quickly for a shot at a deer - they have a small field of view.

I guess it all comes down to practice, I am fairly quick with a 2X handgun scope, but only because I practice alot. At first I could barely find the crosshairs, let alone the target...

Any reddot is going to be quicker to acquire than a 2x scope and it is more than adequate for a .44's range - say to 75-100 yards. It will also have unlimited eye relief and a large field of view.

There are many good reddots in the $200 range. I like the bushnell holosight.

Trapp,
My choice for hunting handguns is also the 2X EER scope. It puts target and crosshairs in the same focal plane for easier visibility and aiming. Have been hunting with a pair of S&W M629 Classics (.44 Mag) since 1990. Both guns (and a S&W M41 .22 LR pistol) wear 2X EER Leupold scopes. Never had any problems with scopes on any of these guns.

Good shooting and be safe.

Leupold

Hey,
I went with a 4x20 Leupold on my Super Ruger Redhawk 44 mag.
The 4 x20 takes some getting use to,but it's not bad.
And with older eyes the 4x helps alot.
Can't go wrong with a Leupold.

Scopes vs. reddots...

On my raging bull, i like a scope, but, I have a reddot (Tasco PDP3) that is also nice to use.

It really depends on what your more comfortable shooting, how your shooting (standing up or sitting down with a rest), and how far our you are shooting (less than 75yrds, I like a RedDot, out to 100yds and beyond with 357MAX or light weight 454 rounds, I like the 2-6x Simmons ProHunter)

A good reddot scope is hard to pass up... and they do work nice.
