Handgun scope choices

My S&W model 29 44 mag is in the shop getting a scope mount put on. Now I need advice on scope choices. I've decided against a red dot scope. Are there any pistol scopes out there that people really like? I've been looking at the midway usa site and can't decide. Help me decide.
Thanks,
Bill

How about a Leupold 2X. Just a simple, fixed power scope. 2x is enough magnification for the .44 mag range. Just my .02.......

cheap suggestion...

If you have NEVER used a handgun scope, order a cheap $30 one (BSA) and test out what you do/do not like about position and magnification before you spend $$$ on a good Burris or Leupold.

I still have my "original" BSA 2x on my 6" .357 and it has never failed me.
(500 rds and the scope is still going)

On my Dad's Ruger 357 Max, the BSA scope broke after the 15th round fired through it. (21gr H110 and 180gr JSP...VERY hot)

He is now going to spend the money on a good Burris and be done with it.
(saw a nice 4x for $169)

[Should my BSA break on me, I plan on getting a Burris...about as good as any pistol scope as I have seen]

He got his money back on the BSA...

just a suggestion.

Another suggestion, try different magnifications also. It is surprising how much more difficult it is to hold a 2x scope steady on a target, at 4x it can be really hard. YMMV.

There is no choice. A 2x Leupold is the way to go. I've got them on more handguns than I can recall at the moment, plus two 4x Leupolds on Contender barrels, and a third one on an 8 3/8" X-frame. So far, this 2x on my 4" X-frame is still holding up fine. This was dubbed "The Scope Tester" not too long ago on here. :D

Jbar-

I like your holster...where did you get it?

Leupold makes VERY nice scopes.

I have met pistol shooters who have blown $200+ on a very fine pistol scope, only to have it end up on either ebay or at a gunshow afterwards...they didn't shop around or "test drive" it before they took the plunge.

A .357 or .44special should work with pretty much ANY scope w/o destroying them. Full house 44mag and heavier rounds requires a good mount, a good scope, and a steady/experienced shooter.

If you flinch really bad at just HOLDING a .357, owning a scoped .454 won't make you a better shooter. :D

[I have always liked Burris...so call me biased]

[/IMG] I think if you buy an inexpensive scope you will be very disapointed. A 629 will most likely ruin a cheap scope in a few shots. A 2x Leupold is the way to go. They take the recoil and stay on target. Can't ask for much more.

the Leupold 2x is on my raging bull 454 casull and it works fine.....another good handgun scope is the Bushnell 2-6x handgun scope....

Warlock, it's made to fit a bandolier rig I bought from a company in Pennsylvania called "Buckem Enterprises". That particular holster is of my own design and making though. The bandolier strap also has a cartridge strip screwed on the front that holds ten rounds.

Magnification of 2x is plenty for handgun hunting with a revolver, which are all I use on mine. If you chose a variable try it carefully at the store before purchasing, when you crank up the magnification eye relief can be greatly reduced and force you into an uncomfortable hold. Leupold and Burris 2x are the hallmark, another I've had great results with for a very good price is a 2x28 Weaver.

Weaver..?

I have used plenty of Weaver branded scope mounts, but, only had 1 Weaver scope. (on my Marlin 30-30)

Its never failed me, but, I have never used their handgun scope line.
Until my cheapie breaks on my, I haven't put money down on anything new yet.
(but I am leaning towards Burris both for cost and talking to folks that have them)

how are weavers for handguns? (357 and 44mag)
