Handgun Rentals at my LGS

I had hoped my LGS w/indoor range would have an XDs for rent. They did not. I am really interested in owning one based on the reviews I've read in the gun mags (yes, I know) and on this very forum, but I'd like to test drive one first.

I was told that manufacturers own those rental guns, not the store, and that the mfgr determines what and when to send their products to the store/range for rental purposes. I was further told that they normally fill initial orders first, and then only later appropriate arms for rental counters. This makes perfectly good sense, as sales are likely far more profitable than rentals, although I did not ask what sort of compensation the mfgr receives from rentals, not that it's really important to the consumer.

My thoughts on the subject were that perhaps the availablility of rentals would stimulate demand on a new product; I've bought several pistols without having ever fired one before, and to tell the truth, I'd really like to avoid that in the future. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hm. Figured we'd get some insight from an industry insider or a LGS by now. I guess my OP was more of a declarative statement and less a request for information?
