Thought it might be interesting to see how you guys feel
about purchasing your handguns manufactured in America
versus handguns manufactured in other countries.....

I don't limit myself to American made but I have a good number of them. I have to say that my favorite rifles are American and I do like my Rugers and S/W's.

I'm not going to support union stupidity in the name of "buying American", or support mismangement of any company under the pretenses that it is somehow patriotic and American to pass up a superior product at a better price point to buy an inferior one at an inflated price - because the company is based in the U.S. and has its manufacturing in the U.S.

Over the last 15 years I've faced fierce competition in my field from India and Pakistan. Republican administrations, Democratic administrations - haven't taken action to protect my field from foriegn competition - nor should they have. It's just the way it is.

Ed.....

3 = We've all owned guns from various manufacturers over the years but some thought is given.....ie may like one more than another & comment.

4 = No thought given to whereabouts of manufacturer so to speak.....

I voted the third choice, because although I prefer to buy American made products, the features and quality of handguns are more important to me than the "made in" stamp. I don't suppose most people would consider Beretta or Glock to be American products, for example, but they both have significant plants in the US and therefore provide jobs to Americans.

I also went with option 3.

The huge majority of my firearms are Made in the USA, and in fact are also made by American companies. Smith & Wesson easily has the lead.

But I also have a HiPower and three Berettas.

I gave the HiPower an exemption because it's (mostly) a Browning design; I gave the Berettas an exemption because my mother's side of the family is Sicilian, which is technically Italian (although in reality it's much more polyglot).

But American brands outnumber others by around 3:1.

Saturday, I did a transfer for a Springfield XDm.....that customer was more than a little disappointed when his brother pointed out that it was "Made in Croatia".

I love these threads where everyone gets wound up about "Buy American".....as they type their post on a computer made of nearly 100%foreign parts.

Quality has no nationality.

dogtown tom, in some cases, there's just no way around it. That isn't always true, though, and given a reasonable choice between an American product and a foreign one, I'll buy the American.

With some products, I am willing to pay a fairly significant increase in price. (I just can't wrap my head around Chinese cowboy boots, for instance.)

With others, not so much. But with most things, I'll pay a little more or drive a little further if I can find a product of comparable quality that is American made.

Mleake-

Although I voted already (USA) on my own thread.....
me thinks y'all got it right :D

I've owned various manufactured guns over the years
as well, but I guess my views have changed of late.....

Buy American?

I hear people say "Buy American". Do you realize how hard it would be to do that? It is hard to say it and abide by it in a global economy. Many of the most American products are actually manufactured overseas. Automobiles, motorcycles, firearms, clothing, building products, you name it. You would have to spend all your time researching products if you wanted to buy strictly American and a lot of products you couldn't buy at all.

I don't pay much attention to where my handguns are made; if I like it, I buy it. For me to like it it should be all I expected it to be and at the most reasonable price, if that happens to be an American-made firearm, that's cool and all, but it makes no difference either way. There are higher forms of patriotism than the "buy American"-type lip-service. As far as quality goes, a product being made here doesn't carry any guarantee of being superior to products that come from overseas. I can't think of too many foreign guns sold here that are along the lines of Jennings/Bryco/Davis/Cobra/Lorcin/Jimenez etc. Nor can I think of any new production foreign ammo sold here that's worse than say Remington UMC or Thunderbolts.

If a gun might save my life or the the life of a loved one, I don't really care where it comes from. As long as it's a quality piece.

I prefer Made in America, however, in this 'global economy' sometimes arms are assembled with parts from other countries here in the US... I don't like it, but it's just a fact of life.

For many years I've wanted a true Belgian HiPower, would love to own an HK, and buy military surplus from England and Belgium. I don't really have a problem with that, but I don't care to buy stuff from Communist (Fascist, etc) countries. I'll never own an AK or SKS no matter where it was made, thank you very much. Not that it isn't a fine weapon with a very robust design. Swell. I just don't care to spend my money that way. I have bought Chinese surplus (Norinco) and found it to be substandard; nowadays, I try not to buy any parts or accessories made in China... not only because I don't want to support China, but I often find their merchandise substandard.

I would easily buy a scope made in Japan, I don't buy scopes or optics made in China. Better yet... German or Austrian (I just can't afford the price of admission...)

It's getting harder and harder to buy true Made in the USA merchandise, I've often wished the retailers (MidwayUSA, CTD, etc) would put country of origin information on their products or product descriptions so at least I could make a choice before the box arrives and I find the Made in China sticker on it...

Quality Rules

I'm looking for quality first; with quality comprising function, fit, form, intent and use. The price is running in second place, while the country of origin is only an interesting bit of trivia.
