Handgun family sale in CA

I am going to buy a handgun from my Uncle. We both live in California. Do we need to go to an FFL for a family transfer?

Bummer. I found a federal Intra-Family transfer form that you just sent to the DOJ directly with a small processing fee but it apparently only works for parent>child and spouse>spouse transfers. I called a gun dealer and they verified the need to go through an FFL holder. They charge $35 which seems reasonable compared to some other fees I've been quoted.

Thanks for the help.

for a transfer like that does it have to be on the californias approved handgun list?

No. Private party transfers are exempt from the list.

That's a California DOJ form, not a Federal form.

In California you are supposed to turn the gun in to the local gun store (to hold) and file the California DOJ paperwork (about $35) and go back a gets ya gun is 15 days.
