I just spent a few minutes at HCI's site http://www.handguncontrol.org] before getting nauseous, but here's the most immediate deception i spotted right away. They have a link that says "CONCEALED TRUTH: Why states with strict concealed weapons laws have LESS crime". When you click it you get:
-------CRIMES WITH GUNS DOWN FASTER THAN VIOLENT CRIMES OVERALL --1996 FBI Data Show Brady Law¹s Continuing Effectiveness In Reducing Gun Crimes
Since enactment of the Brady Law in 1994, crimes with firearms are dropping faster than violent crime overall.
According to the FBI¹s Uniform Crime Report, the use of guns in crime rose significantly from 1985 to 1993. However, since implementation of the Brady Law in
February 1994, there has been a significant drop in the percentage of violent crimes committed with a firearm. A recent Bureau of Justice Statistics study estimated that in all 50 states, 173,000 transactions were not completed since the implementation of the Brady Law because background checks revealed that the buyers were not allowed to take possession of a handgun.
A recently released study by the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence analyzed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm¹s firearms trace database and showed that the
implementation of the Brady Act disrupted established gun trafficking patterns by closing off access to guns in traditional source states. More specifically, the study
showed that the share of guns traced as part of criminal investigations back to states that did not have background checks (pre-Brady) from states that did have background checks dropped precipitously after the implementation of the Brady Act. This supports the contention that interstate gun trafficking occurs, in part because of the disparity of gun laws between states. And, that when this relative disparity is diminished, gun trafficking is reduced. More generally, the study provided
important evidence that the regulation of the retail sale of handguns is an effective means of interfering with the illegal gun market -- running counter to the old adage that only law abiding citizens are affected by gun laws.
Analysis of the FBI data provides more compelling evidence that the Brady Law is working. The significant drop in the percentage of violent crimes committed with a
firearm shows that, since all 50 states began doing the background checks in 1994, the Brady Law is working to make America safer from violent crime....more....---------------------
BLAH BLAH BLAH. Notice anything? Not ONE F-ing word about concealed weapons permits, the crime rate and "no issue" vs. "shall issue" states, the lack of prosecutions by the Feds of prohibited persons trying to buy guns, the fact that CCW holders are among the most law-abiding citizens who have to undergo complete scrutiny to get the permit, etc. They omit ALL the (dubious) facts the headline implies or requires, and in a retarded, convoluted way, actually support the notion that states WITH ccw's (whether strict or not) have LESS crime. . Is anyone so stupid as to not notice this... even ignorant gun-grabbers?
Here's another good one:
-----"Since 1996, however, the gun lobby has failed to convince even one state legislature to weaken concealed-carry laws. Despite the claims of the gun lobby¹s pro-CCW ³expert,² economist John Lott, who attempts to link liberal CCW laws with lower crime rates, several eminent criminologists have now published peer-reviewed studies debunking this flawed research. (See John Lott Q&A). And, in what may be the decade¹s conclusive refutation of pro-CCW propaganda, in April, 1999 Missouri citizens voted against liberalizing that state¹s CCW laws in the first-ever state referendum on the issue, although the NRA spent almost $4 million to win what it called Œthe last great gun battle of the 20th century.¹ Following the Missouri vote, Kansas, Michigan and Colorado legislatures all dropped NRA-sponsored drives to weaken those states¹ CCW laws. Clearly, the tide has turned against hidden handguns."----------------
Some interesting omissions:
* to my knowledge, the ANTI-gun lobby has failed to get even one "shall-issue" state to repeal or tighten their CCW laws.
* John Lott is an "expert", with the implied meaning that he is a shill for the gun industry, when in reality he is a Yale professor formerly of U of Chicago. Both extremely esteemed institutions. Meanwhile eminent criminologists have debunked his findings. Eminent. Wow. I guess we're supposed to take THEIR word for it.
*Missouri: virtually every county in MO voted FOR CCW in this election, and it lost because of the votes against in the counties containing St. Louis and KC. Worse, the US Attorney for MO, under orders from his bosses Clinton and Reno, used your tax dollars to publicly campaign against the referendum on Justice Department letterhead, a clear interference of the federal gov't in a state election. There was an "investigation" into the propriety of this by--who else-- the Justice Dept, and he was cleared. Now that's a surprise. The CCW measure may only have lost because of a strategic error in the text of it, allowing concealed weapons in bars and sporting events I think, which was an error in judgement, imo. Not only that, MO's existing CCW laws are already ludicrous: i recall someone posting here that even LEO's can't carry off duty. Now THAT's a great state.
*Colorado dropped from consideration the CCW review for no other reason than because it was to take place immediately after Columbine, an unfortunate bit of timing. Good politics, and respectful of the tragedy.
I can't bear to look at the site again for now. Maybe later... more lies uncovered.
