Spent a day at the range with the chrono yesterday. Thought I would share results. Velocities at 10 ft. from muzzle, 68 degree day.

Ironically,I pick up a High Standard Sentinel 22 lr snub tomorrow so the info gets used immediately by me.
 
Glad someone got some good out of it besides me. I only did 10 shot strings, but it still took a while to do. It was a really nice day out though.:) The biggest surprise for me was the CCI Velocitor. Not only was the velocity less than I would have expected, but the variance between the slowest and fastest shot was over 175 fps in both the 2" and 4" barrels. I think I may have to get some from a different lot and try them again. All of the other CCI rounds showed pretty decent consistency.
 
These results show how utterly pathetic all of these rounds are when shot in a 2" snubnose revolver.

Even the best .32 H&R Mag load only produces a pathetic 161 ft/lbs of energy. That is only 73% of what a good .380 Auto self-defense load can generate. And only half that of a really mild 9mm load.

And the rimfires are ridiculously low powered. Even the best .22 Magnum load only produced 116 ft/lbs from the snubnose. :eek:

Having one of these guns would be better than being totally unarmed in a fight, but I sure would not want to trust my life to one.

Couldbe: Thanks for that data. I did a much less thorough test of some .22 ammo a couple of years ago. Your data is much more consistent. I tested only SV ammo from a little S&W 317. I had lower velocities for the 40 grain SV, under 800 fps. Your data goes much farther.

Results

Figures may be accurate, but the real world differs in some instances. I absolutely know that .22 magnum in a Ruger Single Six is a deadly combination. I have taken every game animal in Virginia (in my youth) except bear with that combination. Even large Whitetail deer. Chronos show little difference between .22 and .22 Magnum. Yet real world difference in effectiveness is colossal. As an aside I spoke to a gentleman yesterday that has killed 9 deer with a .17 hmr. Five were shot in the neck for "bang flops". Four were shot behind the shoulder, "down right there" second "coup degrace" in some instances. This elderly man said the .17 was as effective as anything he'd used on deer. Spoke with him at a Gun Show, he was probably 70 years old or so. I believed him.

Thank you for an interesting and informative report. Looks like a lot of effort and fun went in to it. Your Taurus 22 magnum 4 inch seems a "fast" shooter in terms of FPS, and seems consistent with other Taurus 22 handgun velocity reports that I've read. For instance the Winchester ammo site chronos Super X 22 Mag. out of a 6.5 bbl. at 1480 to your 4 inch's 1384. Don't sell that Taurus.

The only surprise really were the Velocitors. I would have expected above 1100 FPS from your 4 inch. Have not chronoed these myself but hear typical accounts of 1080-1125 range out of 4 inch bbls. for the Velocitor.

You may want to try Aguila Interceptors some time as these 40 grains are rifle bbl. rated at 1470 FPS, just a little more than the Velocitor's 1435.

I'm saving this thread as a favorite for future reference. It is an eye-opener.

We can see that the velocity advertised on the box is certainly shot from a rifle. 888 fps from a 22LR? Wow.

I'd be interested to see comparisons like this for centerfire calibers.
 
I know these rounds are pathetic to some people, but to others they are what can be comfortably handled. Spend enough time making a living with your hands and using them as hammers and pry bars and some day you may come to appreciate the recoilless rounds as well.
I work out every morning and am in decent shape. But time has neccessitated a change from free weights to bowflex as free weights just stress my joints too badly. I have gone from shooting 45/70 contenders and hot 45 Colt rounds in Rugers to 22's. Amazing what tendonitis and a touch of arthritis can do. Don't poo-poo these rounds to hard as some day you may see the need for them too.

I hate to admit it but we have a guy who works for us that has taken several deer (illegally :mad: ) with a .17. It can be done with regularity, but it seems to me that this gentleman has never used a high powered rifle for deer if this is his claim.
