Handgun at the head of the bed?

Is it safe to keep a gun at the head of your bed? I got a crack that I can fit a large handgun in, safely, gun is able to fit in a holster in this space. It's above my head, facing to the wall not my head. (It's pointed downward and to the wall, I keep my flashlight there also but on the right side where I get up, the gun is on the other side far away.)

It seems smarter than putting it on the dresser or my shotgun across the room..

Only problem I could see is my dog, he gets on my bed often and sometimes in my face, but he never has gotten his leg stuck down in the crack because my pillow is always there, and how could he set it off, its in a holster.

handgun at the head of the bed...

I sleep with a .357 in one of those zippered cases and it is
on my left side where I can access it easily.

I did have my little Tomcat in a case hanging from bed, but
it seemed to me not to be a good place.

So, I would think what ever fits your feel.

You don't want me to have one that handy..... if I'm jolted awake, etc. because I'll come up in complete fight mode. I keep mine in a punch number lock box, so if I get it out... I know I have to be awake enough to do the numbers. 3 dogs give me enough warning time, based upon my experience.... they tell me anything going on outside... before anyone could be inside. They even tell me when the squirrel is outside eating on the patio. Plus, when I hit the bed, they seem to go into in a heightened protection mode .... they won't allow anyone in my room.

Do you only have the dog? kids?

Before we had a daughter I would keep a PGO shotgun on the ledge above my bed. Once she was born the shotgun went to the closet, then the closet shelf; not the best by some standards but worked for us.

Although a bit different from what Eagleks said, I need a moment to wake up so I keep my HD gun in the closet(in a similar type safe, open when home, closed when gone) allowing me to get my bearings. I have been awakend at night with false alarms of our security system and this works for my comfort level.

I stick my carry gun between the mattress and box-springs every night when I go to bed. Nice and easy to reach, yet out of the way, and no danger of accidentally bumping it during the night. My fiancee keeps her J-frame in the drawer on her side at night........still easily accessible, but out of the way when tossing and turning in bed.

Its just me, the fiancee, and a couple dogs right now, so no worries about kids getting their hands on them while I am snoring and creating a drool spot on the pillow.

My general outlook is; if it works for you do it(and does not harm anyone) .

My guns have been accessible(not laying around, just not in a safe) to my daughter for years and we have had no issues. Although I did recently purchase a quick open for my pistol, my shotgun remains on the closet shelf.

Now my dog...entirely different.:D

My dog is good, he never chews anything now, only gets into my trash can by my desk... When he was a pup he would chew cables and wires, but he hasn't done that in years. He is about 12 now.. I am not worryed about him trying to chew the gun grips or something. lol

I keep my 9 in a little nook on the headboard. I have kids and dogs, but I feel good about where it is kept. I keep it partially recessed behind this crappy little sliding door. If anyone ever tried to get in there, it would wake everyone up.

Also, I have a dachshund. If he ever jumps up on the bed and hides under the covers, that will be my first alarm...:D

I sleep with a 1911 in a serpa holster. Its not on my hip but it lays right next to me. Just make sure its in a holster or pouch so the trigger is coverd safely. Heck downrange we slept with our m4 in our arms.

In the past I've had several guns around the house. All were in holsters with tight snaps or zippered pouches. Fortunately, there was never a problem since I taught the kids how and when to use them. Now, there's just me, the wife, three chihuahuas and a lab at home. At night the dogs bark at just about any sound. So, I only have one revolver in a holster in each of the night stands.

With no kids in the house.
My EDC goes holstered between box springs and mattress where its accompanied by a holstered Glock 22.

Course, when we had kids at home, they were raised that our bedroom was strictly off limits to them.

If something were to go 'bump in the night' the handguns would escort me to shotgun kept in the closet....but first, the perp/perps would have to get passed the inside dogs and the external 'motion sensored' lighting.

I have my wife beside me in the bed. That's enough to deter any intruder. :)

Being serious i know when i wake i would not be on the ball an dont know how good my judgment would be.

Was there not a case of someone being woken up and shooting his girlfriend who had just come in. ?
