Handgun AMMO Prices up again, and still out of stock

I ordered 600 rds of Remington 9mm and 200 rds of S&W 500 from Cabela's shortly after Christmas, both were backordered at the time, but the order was accepted.

I've been rechecking the site almost daily for availability and just noticed that the prices for both of these are way up just in the last week or so...

--the 200rds of S&W (350gr) went from $289.99 to $324.99 *up $40 (12%)*
--the 600rds of Rem 9mm FMJ went from $139.99 to $159.99 *up $20 (14%)*

I can't decide if I should suck it up and buy MORE to lock in these prices or just sit and pray that things die down. I certainly don't expect inventories to fill up before Jan 21st given the way they are now.

Ack. Someone tell me some good news here. I feel like I should buy 6,000 rds next time I get the chance, b/c my cash in the bank certainly isn't earning 12-14% a year, let alone in just a few weeks.

Good news: Commodities prices are dropping. Copper and lead will be cheaper, meaning the next batch of stock based on those cheaper commodities "can" be cheaper.

I get the 'can be' part, but were I a retailer and I couldn't keep something in stock, I'd be raising prices too. The real question is why can't the manufacturer's keep up. I understand they were getting whipsawed on the commodity price, but you'd think they would have been able to stockpile enough inventory. Any other industry in the USA would love to have the problem of too much demand (esp right now).

It's not like I'm trying to buy a hot new toy or something. You'd think a 600rd box of ammo was like a Wii on its debut.

you can get 600 rounds of 9mm Winchester FMJ for 119.82 at Wal-Mart. Don't think they carry S&W500 rounds though......
