Hand Guard for .308 Build

Hi All,

I have had a .308 project going for a while now and I'm at the point of deciding on a hand guard. I will install a free-float tube, and I've decided against a full rail since the only thing I will mount is a bi-pod. I've narrowed my search down to 2, possibly 3 options, and wanted some opinions from those who might know something about them (ie: weight, quality, etc..). I am building on a DPMS design and have a 22" barrel from JP with a 2" tactical comp..

Here are my choices:

I am also considering a V-Tac from JP (sorry for no link, I could not copy a shortcut to an image). A friend has one of these on a .204 Ruger he built and I like it. The only thing is that it's diameter is a bit small for someone with big hands, IMO.

Once I get a few more parts in, I'll post some pictures of before and after it's put together along with the specs.

Thanks for any input you may have!

Is this going to be a range queen, or are you going to work for a military contracting service?

The square tube will ride bags better.

Thanks Tiny, I hadn't considered that until now and it makes perfect sense.

I have looked a lot at SWS guards and really considered this one:

Priced at $380.00, it might be a bit out of my price range, though. I like the skelatized rail too.

I like the design of the Badger Ordnance, and like the way the Troy tube would show more of the barrel (that's not a big consideration, though). would any of the above be easier to install, or would they be about the same? I changed out the hand guard on my .223, but it was not free-floating.

Thanks for the replies

a buddy of mine just built a .308. He bought the Troy rail and swears by it. to date he just has a flash light mounted but he likes the rounded hand guard and customization options. his # 1 reason for going with it was weight.
