hand grips-make your own?

I have, with great success!

When I got my Model 36, it had the ugliest oversized wooden grips. With the help of a jigsaw and a sanding drum on a dremel, I sanded them down even with the backstrap (OFF the gun) and cut off the excess to make them three-finger grips. When I got some better rubber grips that worked better, I trimmed them down even further to make some slim-line magnas. I stained them and finished them with a few coats of polycoat. My only problem now is that my grip screw is too long. I can't figure out how to shorten it without bungling the threads.

Depends on your skill. Easiest is a 1911. Revolvers are more complex .However the DIYer has the advantage of making grips custom fit to you which is a great advantage. Some fancy target pistols came with grip blanks so you could shape them to fit. I helped one shooter make grips for his K frame .He had very long fingers and had to make grips that covered the backstrap by 1/2" ! He did a fine job and it cured his problems.

Yep, I've done it.

It was a fun project. A bit of work, but worth it to me in the end. I made them specifically to fit my hand so that the sights line up naturally for me, and it really made a difference when I'm shooting this revolver.

There's a few mistakes, but they turned out well enough for a first try, and they're definitly better looking that the factory grips; at least for me.

I made them from a chunk of mesquite stump from my wood pile. I started by cutting two slabs with a chainsaw, then sanded one side smooth with a piece of sandpaper on a block. There are easier ways to do it, no doubt, but I enjoyed the project.

In my early teens, I remember reading about some silicone type grip tape for bicycle handles. All you had to do was wrap your handles in the stuff, like a tennis racket handle, then heat it up with a heat gun or hairdryer, then give it a good squeeze to mold the plastic to your hand.

The principle was sound, and I'd imagine it would work well for a firearm too.

I might just look into that sometime...

I'm part-way into making some custom grips for a FEG PA-63.

Waiting on delivery of a little router-table conversion for my Dremel, so that I can cut the intricate recesses on the inside of the grip so that it mates up with the frame properly and doesn't interfere with the lockworks.

If those come out well, next is a set of grips for my CZ-75, followed probably by matched custom pairs for both my Redhawks.

Hmm. I've thought of it. I'm a woodcarver hobbyist with an appetite for shallow relief carving. My list of projects is so long, though, I think I'd need a prettier gun to convince me to make a set of grips anytime soon. :D

The easiest gun to make grips for, I think, would be Ruger's SP101 or their older style GP100. I've always had a thing for rosewood...
