Hammerli TrailSide

I would like to hear from anyone who owns a Hammerli TrailSide and has also shot or owned a Ruger Mark II.

I want to buy either the 6" TrailSide Target or a Ruger Mark II KMK-678GCC (Slabside Target).

I want whichever is of better quality, better trigger and better looking.

Thanks.

Well if you're planning to buy the Trailside NIB, its not on the approved list of Kalifornia handguns. Anways, I own a Ruger 22/45 with a slab-side barrel (7 3/8" long I think) and it shoots 1" @25yds with the red dot scope. BTW, all its innards are Volquartsen, very easy to take apart and install. I shall then point you to the right direction: http://www.ontargetguns.com

The Trailside uses crappy plastic magazines. I bought one of the first ones out. It jammed so frequently that SIG replaced the entire gun for me. The replacement was better, but also jammed with some types of ammo. I traded off the pistol. They are beautiful to hold and shoot. I'm quite sure the problem is the plastic mags. It's a shame. SIG normally makes great pistols. Watch-Six:(

I got one of the first Trailsides also. It jams everytime I use it and is beginning to grate on me. I like the look and feel... fits perfect in my hand. I like it so much that I really am trying to shrug off the jams but I'm just about ready to cut it loose. I don't want to spend the shipping to send it to the factory so I'll probably trade it in on something else. Maybe a Buckmark, Ruger or the new Beretta coming out.

Disappointing to say the least. I bought a bunch of magazines for it too!! I, too, think it's the magazines although when I shoot hotter ammo the jams are not as often.

I bought a Tarilside, I had been drooling over the mega-hype horse-**** magazine write ups for over a year.

Within a month I traded it in.

The garbage plastic mag would not drop free. I filed it down so that it would drop free. No problem there. Still, every one of my guns has to have at least two mags. After spending an hour on hold over the course of a week trying to get a info on where spare mags were, and no answer, I gave up.

Mine jammed on the eighth round every single time.

Bear in mind, I am some one who makes a living in a shop full of tools and does most of his own gun work. Iwas baffled by this gun and could not solve the jamming problems. POS, Glad it's gone, never have missed it since.

Bought it for $400, got $200 on trade a month later, didn't mind a bit. Was more than I would have gotten by throwing it in the lake whicjh is what I almost did.

I have had many Ruger Mark II's and presently have two slabsides that are superb. I love them.

I called a dealer who sells both and asked about the feeding problem. He recommended a new High Standard .22 as being the best "out of the box" and with a 2.25# trigger.
Just what I need, yet another choice.
Probably get a Ruger and if the trigger is too heavy I'll just get some aftermarket parts.

I keep waiting for another TrailSide owner to come to it's defense....

I traded my Trailside too. I bought a P226. The Dealer said he'd never seen anyone sell a Trailside. The jams made me crazy. I did the right thing the P226 is a great gun.

That's it then. My Trailside is going to be traded in September at the Big Town Gun Show.

Now... what to buy to replace it? Would like to wait for the new Beretta .22 coming out but thinking of a Buck Mark. I hardly ever shoot a .22 but would like to have at least one. Guess I'll read the boards until then to try to buy one that isn't a jam-o-matic.

MatthewM,

I truly love the Hammerli pistols, but the Sig Trailside is no 208S (I owned one before my eyesight could no longer do it justice). Magazine problems seem to plague this version. One Hammerli/Sig dealer in particular was not selling any Trailsides he had in stock until new magazines were in his possession. An unreliable pistol is frustrating.

You're going to think I'm nuts for recommending this one, but give a very close look at the Beretta 87 Cheetah in .22 LR (not the target model), very accurate, compact, and reliable.
