Hammerless revolver mechanism?

I've always been partial to wheelguns and I really like the Ladysmith (that I orgionally got for my wife to use) as a comfortable carry option.

I really like the hammerless design because my only concern with revolvers in conceal carry was the hammer getting caught on clothing, pockets, etc.

I'm really baffled by the hammerless design though...what/how does the internal firing pin work and engage?

BTW, am I wrong to consider the hammerless design as "safer" for conceal carry?

find someone who has one

and take the side plate off and take a peek at it. It will be easier to understand.

It works just like the others. The hammer is just shaped to fit inside.

Right. "Hammerless" is a misnomer. The hammer is concealed, or in the case of one type of S&W, shrouded.
The idea is to eliminate the hammer spur, which can snag on things like clothing.

i like hammerless cause you can hide it in a jacket pocket in your hand
shoot right thru the jacket.
its a nice feeling to walk down the street holding yer piece
"and nobody knows it but me":D

Interesting...I figured as much.

The Ladysmith is A+ for concealability, but rather poor on accuracy (not to mention that the grip is WAY to small for my hand). :(

What are some other favorite similiar framed revolvers you'd all recommend?

Also easily accomplished with a hammer model. Like mentioned above the spur is removed or covered (don't forget about the S&W Bodyguard) for a snag free draw.

The S&W Bodyguard (49 and 649) has the humpback profile with a small stub of the hammer just available for thumb-cocking. I think it is quite ugly, but if the design suits your needs....

Aww, the humpback is ugly in a good way. and mine is quite accurate for a snubby!:D Grip size is easily changed, here's mine with big, fat smooth presentation grips for an all-around no-snag set-up. I carry it on my ankle or in a Null SMZ. Great companion over the years.

I own a S&W 640 . Stainless, 5 shot , 2 1/4" .357 mag with a conceled hammer . It is double action only.
I think that having the option for single action or double action would be prefered by most people.
Even though It's not a lightweight as far as snubbies go, it's weight is not so apperent with a good holster.
