Hammerless GP100

I saw a hammerless GP100 .357 with a 4" barrel today that was a poilce trade in. Its not in perfect shape, but has mainly aesthetic wear. They are asking $260 including tax.

Is this a good deal?

Will I miss being able to shoot SA if I'm only going to be using it for home defense and target practice?

I'm pretty set on buying it because it felt great in my hand. Much more comfortable than the S&W's.

Your input is appreciated.

That's not a bad deal as long as it's functionally in good condition.

Most people agree that a non-cockable revolver is a better solution for self-defense.

For target shooting most folks prefer to have the SA option, but you can get plenty good with DAO. And the skills you learn perfecting your DAO shooting will be more applicable to the real world.

Maybye not.

After thinking it over I decided I should hold off and get one with a hammer, I may want it one day.

Besides, I saw NIB GP-100's for $400 bucks, and I might be able to find one in better or new condition at a gun show. I figure its better to spend a little extra money for a sharp looking amd probably less mechanically worn gun.

Here's a question for those of you more knowledgeable than I,

Does the GP-100 fire .38's?

I ask this because Ruger does not list the caliber as .357 Magnum / .38 Special like S&W does.

Thanks for putting up with me as I'm getting on my feet.

Most of the stainless DAO 357 Magnum GP-100s are RCMP Embassy Security duty weapons. They are in very good condition. They will safely chamber and fire 38 Special, +P 38 Special and 357 Magnum. The ones I see come with a duty holster at $299.99.

Sir William-

This one came with a duty holster and a speed loader + holder .

It was in good shape, but I thought I could find better.

I definitely decided that I like the Ruger more than the S&W, just by the feel.

I'll be looking for one at the gunshow.

Not many worn out GP100s out there.

Unless you plan to dedicate your life to shooting full power loads through one during most of your spare time, it's going to outlast you.

What I'm saying is that the mechanical wear on the gun is almost certainly negligible and unless you are a really high volume shooter, you're not going to come close to wearing it out. Especially if you plan to shoot .38s in it. Which is perfectly safe, by the way.

If you want a new gun, if you want a GP100 that looks better, or if you want one with a hammer then you should get one. But if you're worried about practical wear (as opposed to cosmetic wear) on the DAO model you found, your worries are probably unfounded.

My used 4" DAO GP100 (probably identical to what you're looking at) and my well used (bought new) SA/DA GP100 and my like new SA/DA GP100 bought hardly used awhile back are all in excellent shooting condition. Endshake and cylinder gap measurements show that all three are essentially in new condition in terms of practical wear.
