Hammer/Hammerless question

Still treading new waters here. I believe the Ruger SP101 comes with a hammerless or shrouded hammer version. In CCW is there much difference in terms of retention with various holster styles. Also is there a fair amount of availability in styles for 3 or 4 inch revolvers? Thanks from a rookie!!

Currentlly, the hammerless SP101 only leaves the factory with a 2" barrel. However, any SP101 can be sent to Ruger to have the spurless hammer fitted. They will return the gun to you with both hammers.

Many quality leather holsters are form fitted and do not need a retention strap. Most nylon holsters use some sort of thumb break to retain the gun, and these are often fitted for a hammer with a spur.

Not on subject, sorry! When I first saw a recessed hammer on a wheelgun, I thought it to be weird looking, and ugly. :barf: I know it's an ergonomics thing, but I'm a product of my time, and will never own one.

BTW, Welcome to TFL... :D

I have both. I use a holster with a thumb break for each one.

There is a concealed hammer and there is a shrouded hammer. The advantage to the shrouded hammer is that the pistol can be cocked and fired from your coat pocket. Not a big deal, but could be handy.

And you can fire single action with a shrouded hammer if you want to.

Just for the record. I would not suggest cocking a shrouded revolver in your pocket and then shooting. A double action trigger pull would be much more advantagious, and safer, if firing from a pocket.

As for CCW I find that an open top holster with molded retention works best, but a typical thumb break will work even without a hammer spur in place.

Just to make sure you are using the correct terminology, Ruger does not make a shrouded or hammerless Sp101. They make a sp101 that has a hammer with a spur and one that has a spurless hammer. S&W and others make a hammerless and shrouded hammer revolver. The Hammerless is a misnomer because it does have a hammer but it is internal.
