Hammer Block ???

The S&W hammer block is a safety device.
It blocks the hammer from hitting the primer (or the hammer from hitting the firing pin over the primer in current guns) unless and untill the trigger is pulled all the way back. It guards against accidental discharge if the gun is dropped, hit on the hammer, or if somebody monkeys with it and slips the hammer.
This is just the opposite of the transfer bar used by Ruger, which rises to connect the hammer and firing pin only when the trigger is pulled.

when the hammer is pulled back the hammer block drops down, when it is down the block rides up and gets between the hammer and firing pin, to hold the hammer off the pin. you will have to take off the side plate to see it. Unless you have done this before I would not recommend doing so now. The hammer block has to ride in a slot on the sideplte.

Take another look at that gun. Make sure the gun is unloaded, then cock the hammer and look in the gap in front of the hammer. You should see a rectangular piece of steel in the front below the point the hammer would hit. You should be able to release the hammer and let the trigger go slowly and see that block move up a little before the hammer blocks your view.
