Hair, Clothing, Jewelry --

Hair, clothing, jewelry -- safety manuals are always stressing that these need to be kept out of the moving parts of machinery. Gladiators and soldiers keep hair shorn short, beards too, so the enemy can't get a hand-hold.

I see chains, loose hair, loose clothing, jewelry which is going to get grabbed in a wrestling contest. So what are you wearing that provides something to grab in a confrontation?

Actually they keep their hair short and stay clean shaven so the protective gas mask seals better....and for a more professional look.

Yeah, that too, and to keep the bugs and vermin at bay. But it still provides a great handle for securing the head while it's bashed.

I'm bald. I keep my beard trimmed short. The only jewelry I wear is a wedding band. I work in mental health/rehabilitation and learned years ago that ties are very bad things. I try to have as few handles hanging off of me as possible. I've also had enough grappling training to be hard to hold on to.

I keep my head shaved, mostly because I've never felt I looked good with hair and I don't have to worry about combing

I used to wear a ring on my right hand but aside from it not quite being the right size I found it affected my grip somewhat. nothing that couldn't be easily overcome though.

Interesting point. I once had a medium-sized biker-type in my face over something trivial. I tried to de-escalate, but he wasn't having any of it. He did have two pierced earings in his left ear, I grabbed his earlobe and twisted hard, put him right down on his knees. I reiterated my lack of desire to have any ruck with him, was ready to put my left knee through his face, and he saw the light.

There's a lot to be said for maintaining a 'low-drag' exterior.

Hmmm, looks like I'm in for trouble then.......ponytail and beard. Actually in the last hand-to-hand conflict I was in my attacker had a great chance to use my ponytail as a disadvantage to me. He came up behind and sent an elbow in to the back of my head, I guess looking for the 1-hit KO. Didn't happen, I covered one side, rotated and swung back....knocked two teeth out. Rocked him bad enough his "homie" had to jump in. By that time bystanders helped out. Sometime during the fight one of them had dropped a screwdriver on the ground....people just aren't man enough to fight fair anymore.

If I was going to arrange my appearances by what potential threats I may encounter....I'd probably just stay in the house. Just my .02

Back in my misspent youth I once demonstrated the tactical inferiority of the baggy pants look.

Let's just say he felt like a fool having his pants yanked down and used to snatch him off his feet.

Now, that's funny, I don't care who you are . . . :D

I've often had the same thought, just never had the need to execute.

I keep it short now days. I do have a beard though. Not sure how thats a detrement unless they have pliers or something.
Also, I know appearances arent everything. I dont know about you but if I see a big dude with long hair and a beard Im usually thinking that he might be kinda tough too. But then again I used to look like that and Im a teddy bear. :)

As I once heard a Sensei state, "While they may grab my hair, it may hurt but losing a fist full of hair is a small price to pay."

Someone seeking to immediately and seriously hurt you and take you out of the fight, with any amount of training, will probably not go for the hair, necklace, beard; this puts them in too close of a proximity to you with one or both of their hands committed to a leverage/pain/intimidating type controlling maneuver. Grab my shirt, hair, loose clothing etc... then way close enough for me to concentrate on taking them quickly out of the fight.

Look at the Sher Pei's loose skin bred into the dogs. One reason is to allow the dog to maneuver and bite back even if it is being held by another animals jaws.

What one may see as a disadvantage, another may see as an advantage. Glass half full...

I don't really worry about it, but then I've never had a pony-tail.

I go to the Barber every three months and get a "buzz". Three months later, I'm back for another "buzz". I do that because I'm cheap, not for any "tactical mall ninja" reasons.

As far as clothing, I dress, if I'm not in my approved duty uniform for the federal agency I work for, in Cargo Shorts and Hawaiian Shirts. It's cold today, so I'm wearing jeans off duty.

I'm just a "middle aged mean fart" and don't worry about things too much.

Biker

i keep my hair buzzed close because after about 1" it starts to go "anime".
and i was alwasy getting griped at because my dog tags were always in my pocket. i can barely stand to wear a watch, let alone rings, chains and stuff.

See I'm so cheap I do it myself :D.

I haven't paid for a haircut in at least 13 years. A set of clippers, a razor and some good shaving gel and I'm good. 'Bout once a month I shave it all off. I know it's time to do it again when it starts to get itchy.

Seems like each time I do it I have less to shave off. :D.

I never wear a ring, I have met 2 people in my life missing that finger due to the ring. The only story of the 2 I can remember is one guy jumped off a step of a truck and the ring stuck to the handle. His finger was no longer attached when his feet hit the ground. :barf:
