HA HA! Russian sub story eclipsing Dem convention coverage!

I'm just glad that I'm not one of the crewmen stuck on that rustbucket. Once upon a time my job was to help track and if needed, kill "enemy" subs. Today, my heart goes out to the crew and their relatives.
Think about sitting under 450+ feet of water
and the only power you have for replinishing your air is stored in some crappy 20 year old batteries!

Oh, yes, not to make light of that situation, as it appears to be potentially tragic - I didn't catch the details - I was just looking at the story's effect on Algore.

The submarine, the Kursk, is an Oscar 2, one of the Russian's latest anti-ship cruise missile armed designs. I believe she went into service in 1994. I hope her crew can be rescued.

FUTO,
Too bad it ain't the staples centre at the bottom of the barents sea ;) Would rather have those ruskies with us then the liberal, they can understand logic and can be converted to the good side.

I doubt Futo is disinterested in the fate of the crew. I too like that real life takes precedence to fantasy. I guess he refers to this story as the "girl in the well" syndrome which can always detract from politicians temporarily.

For the sub buffs out there, is a deep water rescue a possibility with this boat? Can US aid bring it to pass? Yes I find this more important than the DC.

I can't imagine the horror. This is really a bad situation. The bad weather and oblique orientation of the sub makes me wonder if the Russians have the technology to recover their crew. I am uneducated with regards to this topic, but with the current state of the Russian military....

All of you vets that stared down communism through iron sights and lost mates along the way, forgive me, but no man deserves to die like this, even a has been commie. If a soldier is to die, a soldier deserves a soldier's death.

(shivers)

I just finished re-reading Red October. My heart goes out to the sailors on the Kursk.

And yes, dying Russian sailors take WAY more precedence than a bunch of wannabe-Commies who've never experienced the real thing.

I hope they rescue those guys. I can't imagine a death like that, slow and painful.

I am not surprised the media is concentrating on this story instead of their dream team at the democratic convention. People are dumping **** in front of the convention.

I can imagine the terror of those men. All I can say is: those poor bastards. I hope they can either be saved or die quickly and painlessly.

All soliders and sailors are brothers in arms regardless of the uniform they wear or country they serve. I salute them and will mourn their loss.

I served on ships that hunted those guys back in the late 60's and I find NO humor in hearing about what is happening to them. I can imagine no worse death. If the hull cracks, you do not drown, you are incinerated by the super-heating of the air on board as it gets compressed more than in a diesel engines cylinder. If it doesn't you slowly suffocate. Those men were never my enemies, only their ex-masters. They are just fellow sailors, and I will not sleep well tonight.

My father served on the SSN 603 Pollack. The first boat in that class was the Thresher, which sank, renamed the Permit class. He and my mother waited until he was out of the boats before I came along, much for the same reasons as this tragedy. Once you go down, chances are you do not come out.

While I totally think that this is very bad, I do find it a bit funny that the very reason US submarine rescue mini-subs are not helping out is because the Russians specifically designed their hatches to keep US mini-subs from attaching to them, ala Hunt For Red October.....

This is like building a giant wall around your house with no gates and then calling an ambulance when you need help.

Perhaps not only that.. but that they have refused our help altogether.

But like I had mentioned before (even though a few might object with me), is that I still think Russia would rather leave these men on the bottom of the ocean -- rather than allow the US to get a good look at they're latest submarine..

I think you can bank on that statement. I would only hope to be proved wrong.

oberkommando, Staples center at the bottom of the ocean with everyone in it instead of the Russians? That's a resounding affirmative. After seeing Das Boot and U571 both in the last 6 months, the horror of sinking like that is fresh in my mind.
