30-06 --- hunting, 1903a3, and m1 Garand
30-30
.223
7.62x54r
8mm Mauser
7.62x39 --- sks

I would like to use only one rifle powder.

the 7.62 X 39 requires a faster burning powder, you'll have to settle for five out of the six calibers will work with H4895!! William

Never reloaded the 7.62 X39, but in my experience, the 4895 series of powders, that is H4895/AA2495/IMR 4895 is one of the most flexible rifle powders on the market. It is best in middle sized cases. It was the IMR powder used during WW2 for 30-06 ammunition. The 7.62 Nato was developed with this powder before the Army went ball powder. I have used it in the 30-30, 30-06, 223. It should do just fine in the 7.62 X 54R and the 8mm Mauser.

I have not used it in either of the 7.62s because I have neither, but according to the charts, H4895 will work fine in all of them. I even use it in my 460 to the tune of 105 grns.

There's 125 and 150 grain 7.62 x 39 H4895 data on Hodgdon's site. Kind of low velocities, but not by much. Max loads runs a bit over 2000 fps for the heavy for calibre bullet. Under 2300 for the 125.
Isn't as accurate for the .30-06 as IMR4895, but it'll do. Ditto for the 8mm. Pretty much 180 grains plus for the 7.62 X 54R. At least that's the only data given by Hodgdon. Lots of data for .223 and .30-30 too
However, using just one powder limits you quite a bit. For example, IMR4064 in .30-06 makes both 4895's look like sand accuracy wise. And the 'H' may not give as good accuracy with the other cartridges. But it'll do for hunting loads.

Well figure 5 out of 6 isn't bad. :) The problem with looking for the ever elusive one powder fits all is that the powder seems non-existent. Keep in mind when loading 30-06 for the M1 Garand there are considerations to make. You want loads specific to the M1 Garand or as frequently called M1 Garand Safe loads.

I would try the mentioned loads for 7.62 x 39 using H 4895. They may work for you.

Odd, but I find just the opposite. I have gotten unbelievable accuracy out of hunting rifles with H4895. Better than anticipated velocities as well.

Maybe it is in the eye of the rifles???

If you don't mind a loss of a couple hundred fps. muzzle velocity in the 7.62 x 39 then H4895 will work just fine Hodgdons has load data on there load data site for 125 & 150 gr. jacketed bullets, you can use the 123 gr. with the 125 data as well.

With H4895 you can also use the 60% reduced load data with both jacket or cast loads. https://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H4895 Reduced Rifle Loads.pdf

In my understanding IMR 4895 is one of the top three powders for Garand loads, 30-06. I have been using it i my 308 bolt gun, Garand, 303 British, and 7.62x54. I could have tried it in my 7.62x39 and 30-30 but there are other powders better for those. Personally, I don't think you'd go wrong with IMR 4895 in any except mebbe the 30-30 and .223...

H4895 is very accurate in my .308s and with heavy bullets (69 - 77 grains) with my .223 1:8 twist.

Slower powders, particularly IMR 4350 work best in my .30-06 and .270.
Have tried both in my M1 Garands and they like 4064 best

H4895 doesn't seem to be fast enough in my the 7.62x39 - mine likes 4198.

I tried it in my .30-30 but LeveRevolution powder seems to work best for me in the .30-30, especially with the Hornady 140 gr Monoflex and 160 gr FTX bullets.

I've never loaded for a Mauser or a Mosin.

If you want one powder that does it all, that is the powder, but certainly not optimal for all.

As far as 7.62x39 I was testing 3 different .308 150gr bullets with IMR4198 and H4895 and both gave me very good same size groups, and the H4895 averaged about 70fps faster. I was using Hodgdon website load data, and shooting from a Chinese SKS.
