H4831 and H4831 short cut

Is there any difference in these two powders or just the size of grains. I see a lot of loads for H4831but very few with H 4831 sc. I'm sure the sc will fill a case more but in manuals do I need to back off on the short cut

They are pretty much identical. Hodgon's website will confirm this if you use their load data.

In my experience (in 270 win), H4831 and H4831sc gave identical velocities over the chronograph in the 55-58 grain range. I did not try anything outside of that range.

I wouldn't hesitate to substitute one for the other.

It's the same stuff. Only diff is that sc stands for "short cut", and I think that's to make it meter better. I use them interchangeably.

I've used IMR7828 for years in .243 and 7mm mag with excellent results, I just picked up a 8 Pound jug of IMR7828SC and was wondering about using the same charge I used with the original powder.. When ever I replace a powder with a different lot I usually go back and work up again to be sure I don't have a problem.. I feel a bit better after reading these posts!! Thanks, William

The short cut powders take up a little less room in the case, so Hodgdon puts an asterisk in their manuals next to some loads to indicate they will work with the short cut, but there is not enough room for the long cut.
