H335 in 45-70

I have decided I an going to try and load up some thumpers for my new 45-70. I have 400 Speer 400 gr jacketed flat nose bullets and starline brass. I am looking for velocity. I want maximum energy, and substantially unpleasant recoil (at least as much as the lever action can handle) .

One of the powders listed that seems to achieve this is H335 with a magnum primer since it's a ball powder. Speer #14 says max velocity is given with H335 and Hodgdon says the same at about 58gr.

I like the idea of H335 because I already use it for 223. I'm 3031 and H4895 seem good too, but I don't use them for anything else right now.

I just wanted to know if anyone uses it too, or has used it. Otherwise I'll just try a more common 45-70 powder.

Oh, and I want powder compression. Compressed powders help, along with a firm crimp, to prevent bullet setback.

I didn't use the speer bullet but I ran up to 62.0gr of h335 under a remington 405gr SP and it was a fire breathing monster. I believe I got the load from Brian Pearce's 45-70 loads for africa article. They were all Marlin loads but I was shooting them from a 20" encore. Chrono'd a just over 2000fps and had to set the chrono back an extra 5 feet due to the fireball. I started at 52.0gr and worked up from there. I think the 52.0gr load was near 1700fps range IIRC.

45-70 loads

The 45-70 is loaded on 3 different power levels what kind of rifle do you
have?Trapdoor is the lowest level then lever action and finally Ruger #1/Siamese Mauser.I would look to Midway USA for a one book/one caliber book for the load data.I have one and can help just let me know. This old warhorse is one of my favorites.

Howdy,

I have a Marlin 1895 GBL. So it will be loaded to lever action specs, above trapdoor, but below Ruger#1/#3 levels.

I have an H&R Handi 45-70 also but I intend to keep the loads for that gun closer to trap door pressures.

But this thread is regarding my 1895.
