Hi there, new to this forum. I just recently purchased an H&R Sportsman model 999. I am trying to find its manufacture date and haven't had much luck. I believe it to be a newer model being that it has smooth grips with no checkering and it was made in Gardner MA. The serial number starts off with HG029xxx. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

Yes I checked it again. It does start off HG I know This is what is puzzling me. I found that chart and there is no HG to be found anywhere.

Serial Number H&R

If its not AG or H6... Try HR1871.com; although not the old company, they remade some of the older H&R guns. I saw a 949 at a gun show brand new appearance that was (may be) a remake of older design, not the 949s like I have. I also have an 999, but it is a 1977 (AR) model. An email to the new company may help identify yours.

I looked at that site. There is only a phone number and no email address. I am off form work tomorrow, maybe I will try giving them a call. Hopefully they may know.

Well I called H&R today. And gave them the serial number. At first they said that they thought I was reading it wrong. But they put me on hold for awhile and then came back and said that the number I gave them is correct and it was manufactured in 1993. Apparently, they brought them back into production for a short period of time in the early 90s. The people helping me on the phone had no idea they made them then. So, guess we all learned something new today.

Great you found out for sure. The guns I saw at the gun show a couple years ago looked too new and were in H&R 1871 blue plastic boxes. I didn't ask the seller any questions at the time. Enjoy your H&R 999
