H&R Model 622

I have a H&R Model 622, not sure of the year but serial is AB21xxx

I had a bit of surface rust and decided to take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning. Double and single action functioned fine.

When I removed the mainspring guide and rod, I noticed the plastic mainspring guide top was cracked, nearly completely. I was surprised the gun still operated. How common is it for these to break? And would it be best to replace with an all steel mainspring guide rod? Numrich has them...both plastic and metal are same price. The metal ones will work with this gun?

Is there any history as to when H&R switched from plastic to metal?

Those plastic head rods were not one of H&R's better ideas. Replace it with a metal one or you will just have to replace it again.
