H&R M12 cocking problem

I have a H&R M12 (22LR) that I bought from CMP and I am having a problem getting the gun into cocked position. When I cycle the bolt to chamber a round some times it will not go into cocked position and I have to recycle the bolt. I found if I push down and hold a little forward pressure it helps go cocked and goes into ready to fire mode. I have checked the sear engagement and the trigger pull (around 2 lbs) and do not believe my problem is related to the trigger group. It feels like I have a worn part in the bolt, is that possible? Any suggestions what I should be looking for?

Thanks

I don't know what that gun was called in civilian life, but it sounds like the part that the sear engages is worn or was worked on. Some H&R models have what is called the "hammer", a piece in the bolt that the sear holds back and is driven forward to hit the firing pin, while others have a firing pin that the sear engages directly. Since in any case that part is part of the bolt, moving the bolt up and down will change the engagement.

No matter the cause, the trigger pull of that rifle is way too light and is highly dangerous. Please have it repaired at once. CMP may have parts or you can try www.gunpartscorp.com to see what model it is.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your response. I will take another look at tomorrow and see if I can find the parts you are talking about. I have been in touch with CMP by e-mail and will be talking to them on Monday. They have suggested checking the sear engagement and up the trigger pull. If that does not work (and I don't believe that is the problem) "We had a very few rifles for which the only cure was bolt or trigger group replacement. Let me know what you find."

Again, thank you for your direction and expertise

Discussed problem with the CMP armor and he sad they had a few guns go out that had trigger problems. He sent me another trigger and that solved my problem.

Thanks to all the helped.
