H&R M1 Garand in 7.62 - worth $700?

I was in a pawn shop today and a guy was there trying to sell or pawn a couple of rifles. One was a Harington & Richardson M1 Garand. It appeared to be in good shape. The stock was light and had a glossy finish (looked okay, but not very military). The barrel was marked 7.62 mm. He had inherited the rifles from an uncle who was a competitive target shooter. The guy didn't know much about them (the other was a Winchester bolt 30/06 with a very heavy barrel - he wanted $500 for it). Does this sound like a good price for the Garand? Did H&R make these for the U.S. military? Would 7.62 be 30/06, or has this been rebarreled to .308 (the guy didn't know this, or even that the rifle was called a Garand)?

I have the guy's number. He was going to try to sell it to a gun store (the pawnbroker didn't want it). I'm sure they won't offer more than 1/2 what it's worth at retail. Any info or advice would be appreciated.

H&R made around 300,000 receivers (at least they are marked that way) in the early 50's for the military. Sounds like it's been rebarreled in 308 though I'd have that checked, it may just have the sleeve installed.

You can get a Garand through CMP for $500 the last I checked.

Doug - The H&R receivered Garand's are post WWII. They were mfr'ed through 1957 and according to my records, roughly 428,000 were produced.

If the barrel is marked 7.62, it most likely is a .308 NATO rebarrel. Still, I'd double check - the chamber insert that Doug mentioned is less than desirable.

If it were me, for $700.00, I'd definitely give the rifle a second look. However, if you've never owned a Garand, this may be a "Where do I start?" kind of endeavor.

Doug, if you would like some more info, post on the Garand/M14 forum at www.jouster.com . Those guys eat, sleep, and breath Garands. Good folk over there and always willing to help.
