H&R 999 Lockup

Picked up an H&R 999 in great shape. It's a wedding gift for my boss. 1980 manufacture and near 100% blue. 6" barrel, original grips timing is good. The only thing that concerns me is the lockup of the break action. There is the a small amount of movement in the latch. Hard to describe how much in words.

I would assume this isn't correct. Can other 999 owners confirm the lock up should be solid before i take it to the smith.

Boss better not tick me off before he gets married. I like this one.

It is hard to assess something like that without a personal inspection. I will say that a tiny amount of play in the latch is not unusual and should be no problem, especially since the gun does not sound like it was fired a lot. I would just shoot the gun, while keeping an eye on the latch and see if it gets any looser.

I have one from around that same era. If I grasp the barrel in one hand and frame in other I can feel a very small amount of movement. I think with the top break design it is going to have some play. You are probably good to go. I am sure he will like the gift.

Thanks James an Lunger.

I knew it would be difficult to answer. I started to describe the amount but the description ended up convoluted. Lunger's description is very close to what I was going describe. I will get to shoot it this week and see.

(Edited to correct for auto spell error - darn hand held)
