H&R 949

I bought a used H&R model 949, .22 cal., years ago and was wondering how I can find out when it was manufactured. The 1st two digits in the serial # are AR.

Also, made the bonehead move of keeping it in my truck over a winter years ago and it rusted. Rubbed it down very lightly with very fine steel wool soaked with oil and it took off any surface rust but there are some deep rust areas around the end of the muzzle, trigger, and cylinder shroud. Any suggestions for removing that?

I don't see many of the 949 pistols any more. I had one in 1966. My trusty book says that model was made from 1960-1985. I liked the pistol and shot it a lot.
