H&K P7 PSP any advice?

I searched and read alot of the old information on the P7 PSP and found that this is considered a good gun, so I picked up a NIB version yesterday. I was told it is one of only 11 left in the US, so I went for the NIB vs one of the rebuilds. (There was a lot of comments on the rebuilds in the archieves and I did not like the mill mark on the side of the slide).

Anyway, I am about to head to the range to start the break-in process.

What advice can you give me for the PSP? What are good holsters (IWB) and what is the concensus on the best carry ammo? What other sage advice can the P7 club offer to a newbee?

Top notch! You just got one of the best handguns in the world. The PSP is the better conceal gun from the M8 version, smooth sides and safe to carry. Go with Cor Bon 115gr HP's, there do you right and the punks wrong.
With a little practice the Euro mag relase is no problem for quick reloading. Now get you some extra mags as they are somewhat hard to find. M8 mags don't fit must be PSP.
Good Squezze Cocking!!!!!

I'm curious as to which version you have. Is the mag release button flush with, and contoured with the heel of the grip frame? Or, does it protrude noticeably from the heel? The former is my favorite, and much harder to find than the latter.
If you burn large amounts of ammo through it at one time, it will heat up uncomfortably. If you take it easy, that's no problem. Drill yourself in using the manual slide lock, as it is difficult to use for normal and larger thumbs. Enjoy!

I have a good friend who, several years ago, was forced to use his PSP in a self defense situation. A large, drunk assailant, came at him with a tire iron. One round, 115 gr. Fed. H.P., right through the heart at about six/seven feet. End of bad guy.

The H&K PSP worked for my friend. FWIW. J.B.

I have a hard chromed 1984 PSP, one of the first imported into the US. Still looks brand new.

I'd have it hard chromed by MetaLife for about $175.

The PSP is the original P7, the M8 is a derivative.

Go to HKPro and search for SWS - they sell the PSP mags used as demos for $29 each. Just bought three more.

The P7s excel when hot ammo is digested so stay away from the PMC - pretty much crap - I reload to the top of the SAAAMI specs - 4.9 grains and top is 5.0 grains and 1.5 groups at 25 yards is the result. HOT!

Check out Park Cities Tactical - maybe upwards of 100 P7 owners there.

Good purchase. Used PSPs are very rare. Nobody sells them.

Congratulations. A PSP was my first P7, I also have a P7M8. Beware, they are contagious.

Take the chroming recommendation to heart. After about a month of carry (IWB), I was surprised to see corrosion on the finish. This was a new PSP, purchased in November, which I regularly wipe down with Rem-oil after cleaning. I will be sending mine to Metaloy or Metalife soon for chroming.

I went with a Kramer IWB holster. Take the aforementioned advice and head over to www.parkcitiestactical.com . There is no better source of information, and plenty of holster discussion there.

You ever had one of those days when the computer just blitz out on its own and you could not stop it less then pulling the plug?

That is what the prior mistakes are.

Sorry about that.

Thanks for the advice. Having now put 250 rnds through it I found the old archieve comments very apt. Exceptionally accurate gun, downright startling. I would expect 2" 50 shot groups from my custom Baer's, but not from a production 9mm. I did find that the PSP does heat up a bit, but the recoil was very very mild. Easy to control for quick double taps. The magazine release is heel type, flush with the frame, so there is no protrusion. Very easy to operate and swap magazines.

Another quick question, It seemed to me that for a tactical reload, using the squeeze cocker to drop the slide and load the magazine is the prefered method, over a left-hand retraction of the slide and release. Is this correct?

Thanks again, but I think I will have to redo my signature below

Welcome to the club. The P7s are addictive. Regarding ammo, HK recommends high-quality ball for practice. Handloads will void your warranty. Keisler's in Jeffersonville, Indiana sells Fiocchi milspec for @$130/1000.
I've used 3 cases so far with fine results. I carry a P7M13 daily(for 9 yrs) and my bride carries a M8. We use Corbon +p115gr. Federal +P+ 124 does not function well in our guns. I can highly recommend Robar's NP3 finish. Rob

As a matter of fact Peter, the PSP manual states that squeeze cocking is the preferred way to bring the slide into action to chamber a round.

RobCon: Federal HS 124 +P+ is what I carry, and in all the testing I have done it works flawlessly. What sort of problems have you had with it?
