H&K P30SK opinions.

Been doing a lot of reading on carry guns. Honestly it will live in my car door most of the time but occasionally I'll carry it. The P30SK has my attention. At first I was drawn to the DA/SA operation for safety and simplicity of not having a safety but now have been leaning more toward the LEM model.

I'm drawn to the quality, size, capacity, action and looks of the pistol. My wife has a Glock 26 which is roughly the same size and it doesn't do much for me and I really don't care for the trigger.

So any P30SK owners here? Whats your experience with them?

I shot someone else's P30 and USP side by side (full size, not compact). P30 - easier to handle grip wise, hated the trigger. USP - grip felt like 2x4, loved the trigger (though DA was a bit tough since the trigger was heavier, even further forward, and I was already holding a 2x4 in my tiny, non-Teutonic hands.). The P30 trigger was easier to reach but didn't seem as smooth or break as clean. Both had good sights and controls, although I can't thumb that paddle mag release since I lack monkey thumbs and am not a 7' tall descendant of Sigurd.

Both of them subjectively seem bulky to me, though when you compare dimension numbers they aren't really much different from most of the other service pistols out there.

Wish I could remember more details on the P30 trigger as I know that isn't much to go on; but it has been awhile.

I love the P30's. I love the USP's. I bought the P30SK and sold it the following day. It just didn't do it for me.

I do want the P2000SK though.

It just didn't feel right in the hand. It was a bit too long with the flush mag to be comfortable with the pinky dangling underneath.

I tried picking up one of the pinky extensions, but the ergos on that were goofy and further forward than the rest of the finger grooves so it canted my hand in a strange way.

I tried it with the X-Grip adapter and a P2000 magazine... that was the most comfortable configuration for me, but still just wasn't as good. Too bag though. I love the feel of the P2000SK and especially the regular P2000.

For the P30 series, my favorite is the P30L.

Loved the gun, shot it well. Getting rid of it just because I had back surgery and a double stack wears on me after about an hour at 3:00-4:00. Besides that, the only issue I had was the dangling pinky. I got P2000SK extended mag bases and dremeled them to use on the P30SK. Worked great, no longer an issue. Would have kept it if it was a single stack.

Love my P30SK. CCW very well. I was suprised how well I could shoot with the 10 round magazine. I usually CCW with the 13 round magazine. At 7 yards with two hand grip I can consistently put 10 rounds within 3 inches with the 10 round magazine and 10 rounds within 2 inches with the 13 round magazine. I shoot it MUCH better than the HK USP Compact 9MM I tried. Typical HK quality, reliability, and accuracy. I Love the grip on the P30/HK45/VP9 series. Also have a P30LS DA/SA.

First 10 rounds I ever fired through mine with the 13 round magazine and my first LEM HK. Delightfully soft shooter too.

In before somebody fusses OP out for keeping a gun in his car. If I sprung for an HK it dang sure wouldn't ride around in the car, I've got a cop trade-in Glock for that.

I have a P30 with the V3 SA/DA trigger variant, fantastic pistol, very accurate & reliable.

With the "SK" I'd definitely go with the V1 Light LEM trigger variant. HK doesn't do LEM trigger conversions on SA/DA P30. I think I'd also go with the "S" manual thumb safety. I'd also want one of those X-grip mag extenders on the stock mags like sigarms228 has.

What's wrong with keeping a gun in your car? Worried about theft? That's what I have insurance for.

On a side note I went to my LGS today which doesn't have the largest selection usually but they had a full size P30 with the LEM V1 trigger that I had been reading about. I was sorely disappointing in the trigger. I've got smallish hands and still the trigger felt like it was pulling back forever, for me the "wall" could easily be 3/8" forward from where it is. The weight was fine though just not the excessive travel.

Coincidentally I handled a LCP with the newer upgraded trigger and was surprised how nice it was. It fit like a champ in my shorts pocket. I may have to get a LCP and get an H&K later for more of a target pistol.

It's a "different" type of trigger. The long pull IS THE SAFETY for the pistol so you can't have it 3/8-inch forward of where the trigger breaks.

It took me about 500 rounds to get used to the trigger. Once you understand the trigger, the take-up is inconsequential as it becomes intuitive to only return the trigger to the reset point on follow-up shots.

The LEM trigger also gets smoother as you use the pistol. There is a marked difference in the feel after about 1,000 rounds.

Since the long trigger pull is really only needed for the first shot (as the safety), you need to learn where the reset point is, and then ride the reset point for subsequent shots.

Once you get used to the trigger and learn how it works, it's quite a good trigger system.

HK doesn't do LEM trigger conversions on SA/DA P30.

It's not officially supported, but you certainly do it yourself. It's easy. You can either leave the decocker sear in the gun or you can put the LEM sear in and have a slight gap where the decocking button normally sits.

You can convert DA/SA P30 to LEM.... you can not convert LEM P30 to DA/SA. Well, you CAN... but you have no decock ability. You can always decock with your thumb I suppose.

I've owned two P2000sks and handled the P30sk. To me the P2000sk is more svelte and the factory pinky extensions work great for me. I've sold and traded a lot of pistols and the P2000sk is one I miss the most.
