Okay folks! I have heard about the GSG MP5 .22's for a long time and have wanted one but I knew that they were not made or approved by H&K. I have wanted a .22 MP5 since 1981 when I bought my first H&K 91. I did not want something that looked but didn't perform.

30 years later...

I bought a new MP5SD .22 a couple of weeks ago. I know that it is not made by H&K but my l;ogic is that H&K will not put their name on something that would not stand up to their standards.

I am not 100% sure on this so I invite anyone to come up with more info. H&K approved the design and build, Karl Walther built the parts and Umarex imported it into the US. I am not sure if Walther sends the parts or if they assemble and Umarex imports. Either way the combination is working!

I understood when I bought this that slower ammunition, like below 1100 ft per second, would not fire well throught this rifle so II bought some Calibre Hiper velocity .22, 1750 ft per second. At the last minute I threw some Winchester cheapo and Remington gold tip in the bag for giggles!

The Calibre shot outstanding although I thought it was a little dirty, so I thought I would see what the slower stuff would do. The Winchester was new ammo and, to my shock, fired with no problem at all. NOT ONE FAILURE TO FIRE OR HANGFIRE! So, I figured I would get brave and try to make it jam. I had some Remington gold that was old and had been in a damp box and I figured that if it will jam, this will make it do it.

500 rounds, 4 fail to fire and no jams or failure to feed! This ammo was slow enough that the bolt was not thrown back far enough to lock open on the empyt mag every time but WOW!, it really works as advertised!

The rifle has an adjustment inside if you plan on using slower ammo. I left it where it was and 1140 ft per second fired like a dream through it! I fired around 800 rounds through it today and it was super accurate, as accurate as a Ruger 10-22 we were comparing it to. I think if you add a good red dot you would do better but I like the H&K sites the way they are for now.

The GSG is not the same in almost every way. Not to say anything bad about it, it is at least much cheaper than the $519.00 tag on the H&K, but it does not copy the MP5 they way this one does.

I know I am leaving a lot out of this but I am tired and dirty after all the shooting, we also shot my Turkish Mauser! So I wanted to give my opinion on this new little MP5 heater and it is, If you have the money to spend, don't be afraid to buy this one! Top quality, fires great and handles like a dream!

If I were to purchase, I'd try the HK.

I bought a GSG used a few years ago. It ran for a while, then I had the ejector plate issue, which is well documented. I sent it in, and they performed the upgrade free of cost.
It then ran fine for 3-4000 rounds and I started having light primer strikes. After which I sold it.

That being said, a shooting buddy has had his GSG for years also, and a heck of alot more rounds have gone thru it. He had the ejector plate upgrade, but has had no other work done, and it runs like a top.

For me though, If I weren't more drawn to the ergos of the S+W MP15-22, I'd give the HK/Umarex a try

I'd go with the HK/Umarex... in fact I have, except mine as the A5 version rather than the SD version. Absolutely love it, thus far 100% reliable, it's accurate, it's fun, what more could one ask for?

H&K

I was wondering about the Colt and the S&W. The dealer I bought from said that the Colt had problems but the S&W was a good product. I had to correct myself on the S&W as I thought they had said it was hving problems as well. I sure would like to hear more about all the new .22 tactical rifles as there are a lot off people looking at them and many law enforcment officers want to try them for training at home.

On one other thing, I shot that Calibri Super Velocity ammo yesterday and though it seemed a little dirty, it was smokin fast! My drop chart shows that out to 100 there is a one inch rise and then back to zero when zeroed in at one hundred.

GSG, because they took the risk. They are the one that put out this gun, not knowing whether or not the market wanted it. They spent the time to develop the model and refine it.

Then HK saw the success, sued GSG, and released a near clone onto the market, after the niche was well established.

That's all true, but the HK/Umarex does seem to better the higher quality product between. Better made, superior fit and finish.

IMO, yes. The HK/Umarex isn't held together by screws that are prone to gradually stripping out with firing, as is the case with GSG. The A5 stock on the HK/Umarex isn't mostly plastic as is the case with GSG. Working the charging handle in particular reveals a stark difference in fit, makes the GSG almost feels like a toy in comparison.

Just yesterday at the range as I was packing up the HK/Umarex and getting ready to go, the RSO walked up and commented on how much nicer it seems than the GSG-types that some other folks bring in.

They are what they are .22's for the most part are not high end guns. I bought my GSG5 because I always wanted a MP5 (and I would never be able to afford one) this was such a knock off that HK did sue them. You can buy what you want but if you are looking for AR type and you already have a AR then why dont you just look for a .22 upper.
This is just my take but I see no reason to have another complete gun when you can have the best of both worlds with two uppers. (This is if you already have a AR and if you dont and you are still looking to get one the two calibered uppers would compliment each other. Have fun Shooting!!
