H&K carry question

So, I have a full size H&K USP .40 and I love it. I'm a fairly decent shot with it, and I would love to make it my carry gun. It fits very nicely into the small of my back, and I always thought when I got my concealed carry permit, that I would carry it there.

Now, I have my permit, and, I can't find an IWB holster for a full size H&K. When I went to my local gun store today to ask for advice, the dealer looked at my like I was crazy when I asked about an IWB holster for a full size gun.

Practicing around the house, the gun(Let me point out that it was UNLOADED while I was doing this) fits nicely into the back of my jeans. Without a holster, it stayed where I put it, and didn't print under a light flannel shirt.

My problem is, I haven't had the guts yet to actually load the chamber and carry the gun SOB without anything protecting the trigger. I'm probably going to get flammed for this, and I'm man enough to admit I deserve it, but...how dangerous is it to just tuck a pistol into the back of your jeans and walk around with it?

Call it desperation on my part to ask such a silly question.

Hey, Priv...

what variant of USP do you have? I have a variant one.

If you have a variant one, you can chamber a round, lower the hammer and engage the safety to assuage your nerves.

I've got more miles with a cocked and locked 1911 stuffed in my britches than most have with a gun at all. I have no butt divots (tm) and have never had a shot in my trou. I don't think it's luck (I don't play the slots in Vegas), it's just mechanics and being careful.

I do NOT carry a Glock that way. I ain't near that casual.

You are a big kid. You make your own choices and pay your own penalties. IWB works well for me. I can't guarantee your success or failure.

Big Boy

Yes I have the varient 1, and the fact is, even in a holster I will probably carry it with the hammer dropped. One reason I love the H&K is all the different ways you can carry it ready to use. I'm just not sure I'm a Condition 1 kind of guy.

My main reason for asking this question was a few weeks ago, I thought I saw a topic on something like this, and bunch of unflattering adjectives were used. Imagine that...me concerned about my image.

Thanks for the support an pep talk Archie.

Can you carry a fullsize pistol Mexican style?
Yes...with reservations.
It will shift around, which will make it hard to get a consistant drawstroke.
It is possible, though unlikely, that bumping against something could cause the safety to be disengaged.
There is always the danger that the gun will simply slip free and slide down the inside of your pantleg. Certainly an event that will live on to become a future humorous anecdote.
Is it dangerous?
Probably not.
Are there better methods?
Yes.
Blade-Tech makes a Kydex holster for the fullsize USP in several different flavors. My personal pick for anything that is a carry gun would be an IWB holster.
If you are considering concealed carry out in public for any length of time, there are 3 very important items that you need to pick in order to make you carry experience as comfortable and comforting as possible.
1)
Get a good belt. If at all possible, order one from Milt Sparks
If you can't afford the cost or wait for a Milt Sparks, The Wilderness Instructor's belt may be a better choice. At any rate, make sure your belt is at least 1 and 1/2 inches think, and as stiff as you can find.
2)
Get a good holster. (already talked about this.)
3)
Get a good carry gun. This is totally up to you, and you should pick your carry gun based on what your needs are. If the USP works for you, swell. If not, be open to other options.

Ok, so there's a few random missives from me with regard to concealed carry.:)

I've been using an inexpensive size 15 Uncle Mike's IWB open type holster for my USP9f, secured snugly at 4-5 o'clock position with a 1-1/2" wide leather belt, untucked shirt. ;)

I don't like the idea of SOB carry. A fall may result to an injured spine...

EXCELLENT holsters for IWB for the full sized USP at Comp-Tac, with very reasonable prices, and extremely fast turn-around time!

Check the Comp-Tac "Undercover" for your needs.

To address your specific question: yes, you can carry IWB without a holster. I have for years. I also have a belt-slide holster for when I am wearing a jacket or a thick-enough cover garment, but I mostly prefer to just carry it in "my britches." I can run, jog, and do most other things without my pistol falling out, and I've never had a ND. I carry a Kimber Pro CDP.

I'm looking into getting a kydex IWB holster, and start using it daily, but I haven't picked out the specific one, yet.

I would recommend that you use a holster, even though plenty of us boneheads don't.

You guys are great!

Thanks to all you guys for your help, espescially GRD, who helped me Times two. It seems the gun store I shop at is big on Galco and Bioncci stuff, and neither of them make what I wanted. I was able to find a holster this morning though at Blade-tech, and ordered it. Now, I have proven myself to my wife andset aside the 200 hundred I was going to spend on a not so perfect gun.

Next payday, I'm making the jump(with her permission of course):( and getting the new Ruger GP-100 I've been looking at. 3" Barrel .357...here I come. Of course, then I'll need to look for another holster, but truthfully, looking is half the fun.
