Guys, i really hate having to apply oil after each handling of my shotgun, and i would really like to have something, that when out and about, if i get a sudden rain storm, i dont have to worry about my shotgun, so if i get it coated, which i am really leaning towards, should i have it done professionally, or do it myself and what product should i use, or have you guys had the most success with, i want rust proof practically, and not having to oil very oftern, thanks guys

Many clay shooters that use their guns on a regular basis shoot in the rain, many with $10,000 guns. What seems to be the problem with oil? I personaly use CorrosionX on my guns, it seems to penetrate and not wipe of with handleing.

Waterfowlers have been dealing with the problem for years. I used to coat mine with WD40 when hunting. Just being in a boat can get it wet, without rain. The main trick is to break it down when you get back and clean it. NEVER put it away in the case. If you have to travel a long way home, leave the action open and out of the case after wiping it down with a rag. That includes the chamber--carry your Tico with you.

What sort of shotgun are we talking about here?

If it is a $200 870 I say paint it, flat black, olive drab, camo, whatever suits you. Paint is durable and easy to touch up, and costs all of $6.

If this is a new high dollar gun the best finish would be hard chrome, nearly impervious to corrosion and as tough as a finish gets but a pretty bright finish. A little more subdued and just as corrosion resistant would be the camo dip finishes, like from second skin. The downside to the camo dip is that it isn't as tough as a good hardcoat treatment.

Lots of poly finishes out there, most are very good for corrosion, reasonable for looks, but not very tough.

Oil. CLP or one of those silicone impregnated rags will work.Coat the surfaces before shooting. My K80 has been soaked thoroughly and even coated with snow. Wipe it down after shooting before you return it to it's case. Put some oil in the chambers also.

Clean it thoroughly when you get home.

My WD 40 days are gone. For protection I use Birchwood Casey SHEATH Rust Preventative. It displaces moisture, and provides enough lube for a shotgun. I use it on all of my guns to wipe them down.

Rugerdude: Once it's cleaned up and oiled, the case is the best place to protect it while traveling. Just don't put it in a case when wet.

I've been using motor oil for 20 years. Purchased one of the "fancy" gun oils years ago and had problems. It evaporated to quickly.

Now, use a synthetic motor oil (20w50). Lightly wipe the guns down, and it doesn't evaporate.

As for my gun safe, wipe down the guns, then burn a candle to get rid of the oxygen...no oxygen, no rust.

I also use the motor oil for lubrication on auto's, seems to work fine for me, with a wide temp. range...if Nascar can trust $50,000 engines with this stuff, I suspect I can trust it to continue to care for my fine firearms!
