i just recently inherited a side-by-side 16 gauge shotgun and i have no idea when or who the hell made it. it says Gustloff-Werke and under that it reads Waffenwerk Suhl. there is sone really nice engraving on the sides of the thing. all i've heard was that it was a pre-war German manufacturer that also made K98's. so does anybody know anything about this company? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gustof or Gustav-Werke refers to the factory belonging to the Krupp steel works, one of, if not the biggest steel manufacturer in Germany. Excellent steel and a high quality gun. Hope this helps. Goatwhiskers the Elder

GUSTLOFF
I know little about your particular shotgun, however, it was probably made in the late 1800's to mid 1900's. That is the era of Wilhelm Gustloff.

This name is well known throughout Germany. He had many companies that supported the Third Reich. Hitler liked him so much that he had an Ocean Going Luxery liner (later taken over by the Kriegs Marine, War Navy,) and converted into a troop ship, made in his name. It is reported that the ship was larger than the Titanic. There are several films about this ship, Triuph und Tragodie der Wilhem Gustloff, Ghost of the Baltic Sea and Die Gustloff.

This ship, and an armada of over 1000 boats and ships was, used during "OPERATION HANNIBAL" ( The evacuation from East Prussia, of thousand upon thousands of soldiers and civilians when the Russians were entering Germany) The ship was sunk by a Russian submarine, #13 while trasporting these refugees and soldiers.

My wife escaped the Russians with her mother, grandmother, herself age 8 and her brother age 5 during this era, and fortunately was not on the Gustlof when it was sunk by the Russian Submarine #13. Thousands of refugees and soldier were lost. My wife and her family went cross country, by foot, from Konigsberg to the Baltic Sea and the Port of Pullau, leaving Konigsberg on 26 Jan 1945. Making a safe get away, by sea to Denmark and out of the war zone.

thanks for the information. looking around it seems that the company was named in 1939 and went until the end of the war where the company was renamed a few times and eventually went back to Simson
