Gunsmith assocation

Hello everyone, my name is Larry and I'm a new member to this forum. I also about to begin studying at the Colorado school of Trades for gunsmithing. I wanted to find out if there is some kind of gunsmith assocation that I could join. Has anyone heard of anything like this? If so, how do I get in touch with them? Also, anyone have any information good or bad about the Colorado School fo Trades gunsmithing program? Any info would be helpful.

Thanks

Larry

Welcome to TFL, Larry.

This might get better responses if it were in the Smithy forum. Off we go.....

There was a small mix-up in communications between Larry and I. So if you happened to have seen 2 identical threads, that was the problem. It is now fixed.

There are several guilds that you can join. The American Riflesmith and Pistolsmith Guild both take members that are not voted in yet that can follow along and garnish some excellent ideas and techniques. Just simply type in the name in a google search.

The American Gunsmith Association, has a monthly newsletter that has some good articles and tool tips as well as a Q/A that can help you out from time to time. They can also sell you liablity insurance for the smithing work that you will be doing as well. Just type in their name and it should pull up as well. Best of luck to you.

GunSmithing guild

I am a graduate from the Gunsmithing Course of study at Lassen College in Susaville, Calif. They had the Lassen Gunsmith Guild which I was a member of. That was back in 1965 and 1966. Colorado School of Trade has a good reputation. But all schools lack something. A couple of things to think about:
1. Learn how to cave stoks out of stock blanks on a multiplel spindle carving machine where the end product is carved to 100% of its dimentions. We will need a source of newly made military and commercial stocks to replace the cracked and broken stocks.
2. There is a need for someone to learn to drill and rifle barrels, then cut the contours of military and commercial barrels. Thie contour of the barrel should be cut on a CNC lathe programed to due it. This will save alot of rifles from being wall hangers.

If some one would set up to do either of these tasks. You will make a good living at your trade
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Peace Be With You,

I want to be a gunsmith

So I can make a good living being a gunsmith. I'm not sure if I want to go into business for myself right after school, I was kind of thinking of working for someone like Gander Mountian or some other sporting goods store that does gun repair. What do you think about that?

Thanks

Larry:)
