Gunshot in the night

Well it seems tonight as the wife and I were talking to our daughter who is away at college, via the computer. This was about 11:30 pm a gunshot rang through the night air.
This sound came from right down the street.Wife called 911 and reported right of way. The local PD was here quite rapidly I might add for living in rural America. Officer came to the door and I reported what I heard and seen.
It sounded like a .22 had that distinct sound. No it wasn't a car back fire or a firecracker it was a .22. Just about after hearing it I walked out front just in time to see a car turn the corner and turn down another street. reported same to the officer with a brief description. Was it the shooter I don't know. I figured they wouldn't find anything but they did check and looked for spent casings. I told the officer it may have come from one of the old farm houses out back, maybe a pesty possum or skunk being shot and maybe the shot just echoed through our development. But it did sound real close and down the street. Anyway he did another drive through and told us if we heard anymore to give a call. He said the last time he had a call like this he found two bodies  Well anyway that was my excitement for the evening. Now I have to sit back and wonder, is crime finally finding its way to my quiet out of the way neighborhood? :( I knew it was going to happen sooner or later and I kept hoping for later

Firing guns out of cars seems to be the "in" thing to do -- even here in "gun-free" West Aussie.

Coupla months back, I was standing out on the upstairs patio, having a last cigarette for the night , about 11.00 p.m.

Damp, heavy winter's air -- then four shots in quick succession. Centrefire, but without that "whistle" you get when something fast is fired into the air -- more like a .38 handgun.

All the neighbourhood dogs barking ... rang Central police station and reported it. They said they'd get someone out there "when they could".

Never heard any more -- either gunshots or from the police.

Now, I hear a shot or two every month or six weeks or so late at night -- usually rimfire. Don't even report it any more. :(

Oh Lord...

You know you're in trouble when FUD says he's gonna write up another story when he gets time. :D

At any rate, I kinda wonder how many time the po-po have been called when I shot a possum or two in the back yard at my parents place. Back when the neighborhood was developed, it was in the county. The city grew and took over the neighborhood several years ago. However, many residents who did not want to be in the city limit, refused to do so, so kept their "count status." My parents neither have to pay city taxes.. yadda yadda yadda. Another lovely thing is that technically we can shoot on our property without any legal repercussion.. via county law(s). So we occassionally have to dispatch a possum or two during the summer nights to keep the dog from getting a hold of it..

No problems from police/sheriff dept.. but we are talkin' about North Georgia here. :D

God, Guns and Guts made this country a great country!

I sort of figured that it was fired from one of the farm houses outback. It would seem likely that it was directed at a pesty possum or skunk maybe even a PIA cat. We are loaded with these up around here. Suburbia takes over the country. Anyway I'm situated in a valley, a short drive to a major highway in one direction and a short drive to big time suburbia in the other. We have had 2 home break ins that I know of in the last 15yrs. Both were done by local teens. My mailbox was smashed once,by a disgruntled boyfriend of a neighbors daughter down the street. But you go about 6 miles into the downtown area WOW its the gunfight at to OK Coral. The BGs are shooting it out and killing one another all over the place. All drug related I might add. Since my area is not far from Philadelphia and alot of low lifes find their way here from New York We seem to be the center of transient BG activity. The city police are shorthanded
The city fathers want the county to help bail them out  And I believe its just a matter of time before it is found out that we are kind of easy pickings up here.
What is sad to me is that I know How quiet and peaceful the area used to be. We had alot of big industry here and even sported a railroad named after the city of which I speak. Now as in many cities across America the big industry is leaving and the city has died. All thats left are the good people that were born and raised here. The transient people from the other cities mentioned looking for a cheaper place to live,And the dregs following them here for easy pickings.
Sad commentary for a once great city but this is whats happened across America and it only took awhile longer for it to hit here.
I knew I should have bought that 40 acres in Arizona ;) But then again will you ever get away from it? Will we ever be safe and happy again

Have you checked your mailboxes and street signs. We have that every where in rural Indiana. Not sure what they shoot at down in the hood...

Hmpff... Sometimes I'll hear folks crank off a whole magazine of nines, or a burst or two of full auto (generally sounds like an AK cyclic rate)...

I live by Forest Park in St. Louis.

My subdivision borders a "bad" neighborhood.
I hear gunfire at least once a week.
I'm moving in October, but I wonder how long good folks can keep "Retreating"?
