You know what REALLY irks me about the MTV rant...
on hate crimes. Regardless of how you feel about "hate crimes", the stupid MTV blackout incessantly repeated after relaying each horrific crime, how "... and STILL there is no uniform federal hate crime law". Excuse me for a moment.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Idiots! State's rights. State's rights. State's rights! If your state wants to pass it, then by all means, go for it. This is an issue of federalism and the 10th amendment. Whether hate crimes are a good idea or not a good idea (I don't think so), they certainly are NO BUSINESS of the federal government in any event! Each state can decide what's best for it, based on the values of ITS citizens. This is why I hate states like California and NY so much. CA has something like 29 votes in the Congress, to my state's 5, yet they vote nearly uniformly to pass every federal law that comes down the pike, without a scintilla of respect for the 10th amendment, shoving stuff down our throats here in my state where our citizens values are very different. And what's worse, Republicans no longer even blink an eye about whether the subject matter is even proper for the federal gov't - whether the Repubs are for or against an issue, their only interest is to aggrandize their power, so they've got plenty of legislation to shove down the throats of everyone in the country, just like the Dems. Makes me sick. You think Repubs have abandoned us on gun control? Yes, but it's nothing compared to the utter contempt ALL federal politicians have for the 10th amendment. This is what causes revolutions, folks - Too much centralized power, with no access to representatives. Highly centralized governments like we're becoming are historically eventually overthrown. Only by sticking to the Constitutional model of decentralization can we survive as one nation. Revolution is horribly devastating, but the eradication of the 10th amendment will ultimately lead to revolution, and it will be a more direct cause of it than the eradication of the second amendment, though they of course both contribute.
