Guns in Jamaica???

Hi guys, I'm back from my wedding/vacation....

Jamaica was fun, but one thing that surprised me right away was that the LEO's don't carry handguns... I mean, they were everywhere in the port city, always in two's.. They had radios, cuffs, something that looked like pepper spray,,, but no guns....

One of the taxi drivers we had was telling us about how Jamaicans celebrate their independance day, and asked me what we do in the states for ours... I told him we gather in large groups and watch spectacular explosions, and shoot alot of guns out in the country...

He seemed pretty shocked...

Really ??? I've seen photos of typical jamaican political campaigns - people running through the streets shooting at each other !!!

Just came back from Jamaica earlier this year. Didn't see any police with guns, but i know they have them. Jamaica is not a very safe place to visit without being in groups. This ime I stayed in an all inclusive resort, and only ventured out across the street twice to visit the local hut dealers. Did hear of a resident of the resort getting robbed in a cab by a local and the cabbie didn't do anything to help. Years ago when I visited, i rented a car and went all over. On one occasion while stopped on the side of the road taking pictures, a car pulled up beside, and a local told us to get the H#%@ out of there or we probably would be knifed....Later that week, when lost on a road near the airport, we stopped to ask for directions from a local. He proceeded to kneel down to window level on my wifes side of the car and proceeded to point and talk.....then in an instant, he ripped the gold neclace off my wifes neck and ran into the cane fields...

I know what you mean SOSARMS, we had a few tense moments last week.. I carry everywhere I go at home in the states. I really am grateful I have that right.

Last time I saw cops in Jamaica, they were carrying machetes. I wouldn't want to piss them off or i'd lose a body part O_O

Dang, cops with machetes.... What do they yell at BG's? "Stop or I'll chop!!"????

Really though, can anyone give me any info about why they don't carry handguns?

The problem is long-standing, and is aggravated by Jamaica's gun prohibition laws. The human-rights group Americas Watch analyzed Jamaican homicides in the early 1980s. About a third of homicides in those years were committed by the police. Indeed, in some years the rate of Jamaicans killed by police was higher than the rate of Americans killed by anyone. Although the police usually reported that the killings took place in a shoot-out with the victims, Americas Watch contends that the police were lying. Many of those killings, the human rights group said, were deliberate killings of personal enemies of particular policemen.

Wow that link is a real eye opener for me and anyone else planning another trip to Jamaica... I was planning on a lot of wedding anniversery trips....

Maybe we'll stick to the cruise ships, with the 8 hours in port....

Jamaica's gun prohibition laws

Can someone give me a link or two regarding this?

Ferchristsake don't stay on the cruise ship or inside the "all-inclusive non-cultural" areas. Jamaica is dangerous but not to such an extent that you need to stay in fortified areas.

How the hell are you going to get some real-deal jerk chicken in a location constructed for Canadians and other tourists with bad taste? You will not be able to.

Go out and see the island... in groups, during daylight (mostly, anyway).
