Guns in China

There is a growing fascination with guns in China. Apparently they've been reading Mao's little red book that instructed, "Power comes from the barrel of a gun." Too bad some people are taking it to heart. Read about it here at this Wall Street Journal article Link

If the Chinese people had enough guns it would quickly become a new situation in China... The dragon is awakening as people have new chances for opportunity, in the end the yoke of the old empire will be cast off, the price Im sure will be high...

On the other hand I read a news story a few years ago about a crime wave in the PRC then. It cited the case of a rural police station, for 20 officers they had ONE firearm.
It sounds like a chance for some evangelization and "spreading the gospel", so to speak.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

I rather like being one of the very few countries on earth that have tons of guns... It makes me feel better, even if it's not a true deterrence...

In 1938, as the Communists battled the Japanese and the ruling Nationalists for control, Mao Zedong made his famous remark that "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" -- foreshadowing strict gun laws the Communists later imposed.

Political power only for the vanguard; workers and peasants need not apply.

when guns are outlawed who will still have guns?

The article is simply more proof that gun contol is a myth. The Chinese Justice system can be pretty harsh but yet criminals are still using guns.

The more people in the world who have guns, the better off we are. The better off they are. The better off the world would be.

guns are not necessary in china unless your kung fu is weak.

:D

Despite what we've seen in the movies, gun fu > Kung fu. Kung fu neither stopped the Tien An Men (sp) Massacre nor the Boxer Rebellion.

Interesting last quote in the article: "I envy people in other countries where guns are legal."

I think we can easily take for granted just how ready our access to firearms actually is. Even in the restrictive states (California, New Jersey, etc.) it's orders of magnitude better than most of the other nations on earth. In places like my native MO, you can have pretty much anything you want just for finding it in stock, paying for it, and clearing the NICS check.

But I highly doubt China will see anything close to our kind of access. It just won't happen, for the reason 4V50Gary and Standing Wolf said... Chinese history explicitly links firearm ownership with political power, and the communist government is NOT big on the people having any meaningful political power.

It's something to keep in mind, and that's why I think the Founding Fathers gave us the Second Amendment... the recognition that the ability to mount a violent resistance provides the people with a trump card that the government must recognize. We need to not take our own freedom for granted.

Well good for them, the more shooters the merrier. Alhough I don't see guns being ingrained as a core of their nation's heritage, so I don't know how far they will ever be able to get on the RKBA front.

Nonetheless, good luck to them.

Wouldn't worry about it. Civilian gun ownership only benefits a nation's defense. I don't see waves of Chinese civilians storming the beaches of California armed with their hunting shotgun anytime soon.
